Why is it that so many people have no problem accepting that herding dogs have an instinct to herd, or that Beagles have an instinct to follow a scent trail, but somehow you are the equivalent of a racist if you point out that dogs that were bred to fight are going to have a tendency to be aggressive?

People abandon all logic when it comes to certain breeds.

Yes, you can have aggression in any breed, and I have certainly seen it in atypical breeds, and lots of it in Chihuahuas and Dachsunds, who also can be aggressive but can't inflict as much damage as Pitbulls or Rottweiler, but the statistics do not lie.

Pits account for more serious and fatal dog attacks than any other breed, by a very large margin.

And people do NOT know how to read body language, especially in Pits.

They often confuse signs of red zone aggression and prey drive with pure excitement or a desire to "play."

Most people should not own them, or any other powerful fighting or guarding breed.

The thing most people don't realize about having a service dog is that it quite often can make your disability worse

If you're not an extremely outgoing person, you will probably get overwhelmed when random shop owners or even just other customers confront you about bringing your dog somewhere

And it can just be a lot to have people constantly staring at you, talking to you and asking you if they can pet your dog

So if you're someone who already has anxiety or is already stressed, things could definitely get worse for you.

These days it seems getting a service dog is a growing fad and more and more people are getting one

But if your problems would significantly be exacerbated by getting one, it might actually be best for you to reconsider

Unfortunately, if someone wants to rescue a dog from a shelter, 80% are pits or pit mixes

And then shelters are too full so they often have free adoption

Are they really placing these dogs in safe places?

And why are there SO many pits in shelters?

What can be done?

As a society it's time to have some needed hard conversations.

Even though we love Pitbulls and bully breeds, you'll never hear us breed denying, which is denying the reality that different breeds have different tendencies

We understand that we can get very emotionally attached to our dogs, and in many ways that's a wonderful thing

But we can't let emotions cloud our better judgement and make us deny the fact that breeds exist and in fact were bred for specific purposes, many of which are not favorable for families and first time dog owners
