One of the biggest mistakes we see first time dog owners make is going to a shelter and picking a dog based on cuteness and emotions

We always recommend adopting from reputable breeders who temperament test their puppies

The thing about shelters is that they often don't do DNA tests and there is a very high chance of any given dog having some pitbull in it as an estimated 50-80% of dogs in shelters have at least some Pitbull DNA

And it also doesn't help that many shelters will take in pit mixes but label them as boxers, terriers, hound mixes or other softer, more recognizable labels to increase adoption rates and help dogs bypass restrictive housing or breed-specific legislation

The problem with Pits is that they tend to have a high prey drive, meaning that they have a strong instinct to find, pursue and capture moving objects or animals, which is not ideal if you have kids

Pits are strong, high energy, prone to reactivity and resource guarding, and can bite without provocation

It's a lot to take on for first time dog owners and we strongly recommend beginners to start out with more forgiving breeds

A lot of people online call this “balanced” training, but for us it's just part of our philosophy of putting the safety and well-being of our dogs first

Because training should be fun, both for the owner and the dog

So we prefer to use rewards based methods, and when needed pressure and release training

Dogs learn best when communication is clear, expectations are consistent, and training is tailored to the individual dog in front of us

Some dogs simply don’t respond well to toy or food based training.

In these cases, we often use something called pressure release training, which means applying the minimum possible pressure that a dog will respond to until he does a desired behavior and then immediately relieving that pressure.

Pressure release training can be very useful for leash training and for teaching all kinds of commands, and dogs tend to learn from it much faster than they do from rewards based training.

But pressure release training is also important because there are sometimes situations where a dog is simply interested in something else more than a treat, so a treat is simply not going to motivate him in those circumstances.

This is why we actually train many of our dogs with both rewards based training and pressure based training.

The goal is to communicate clearly and give the dog multiple ways to understand what is being asked of him.

A dog that both learns through rewards and knows how to respond appropriately to pressure tends to be much more reliable in the real world where there are all kinds of unpredictable situations.

4 simple ways to prevent your dog from biting your kids:

1. Never allow your child to hug your dog or put their face near your dog’s face. Gentle pets from arms length are much better.

2. Never allow your child to take a toy or anything else from your dog. Playing fetch is a safe alternative

3. Never allow your child to pet a dog while they’re eating.

4. Never allow your child to bang the crate or bother a dog when they’re in it. A dog’s crate should be their safe haven, and you don’t want to make them feel cornered.

Many dog bites are preventable when we teach kids to respect a dog's space.

Why is it that bully and pit breeds are the ONLY dogs that need defending?

The argument is ALWAYS “it’s the owner not the breed.” I swear I see the comment 100 times a day. For some reason, people believe that any other dog was bred to do what they do, but when it comes to a pit, it’s just “how they were raised”

And not only that, I’ve seen MANY cases where pits were raised with love and training, but still snap. Where the owners say “I never saw this coming! I would have never in a million years think he’d ever even hurt a fly!”

Pits weren’t bred to be family pets, they were bred for a very specific job: to kill. If you use them to hunt, I understand, but families with children should stay a million miles away from these dogs.

Most people don't realize that Pitbulls were originally bred for bull-baiting and illegal dogfighting.

19th century breeders crossed Bulldogs, for tenacity and strength, with Terriers, for agility.

Both have a high prey drive, and the combination was an ideal one for blood sports.

Even the name "pit" comes from the venue of the fights, a contained pit in the ground.

It's no wonder that dogs with this kind of heritage would send hundreds of thousands of victims to the ER every year.

80% of dogs in shelters are Pits or Pit mixes.

The question that remains is: are we okay with so many of these dogs roaming the streets?
