August is National Immunization Awareness Month, and leptospirosis is now a core vaccine for dogs according to American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) guidelines.

🦠 Lepto can cause serious kidney and liver disease in dogs and can also affect people.
💧 How are dogs exposed? Typically through contaminated water where infected animals have been.
🏡 Could your dog still be at risk? Yes. Exposure doesn't require a close encounter with wildlife.
💉 What about vaccine reactions? Today’s lepto vaccines have been reformulated, and reported adverse reactions are uncommon.

🚜🐄 Why does my veterinarian need to see my livestock before prescribing medication?

We often get asked why we can’t simply refill or prescribe medications over the phone. The answer is something called a Veterinarian-Client-Patient Relationship (VCPR).

A VCPR means your veterinarian knows you, your operation, and your animals through recent visits and has enough knowledge to make safe medical decisions.

This is important because it allows us to:
🐮 Prescribe medications legally and responsibly
💉 Ensure the right drug and dosage are used
🥛 Help prevent drug residues in meat and milk
🦠 Promote responsible antibiotic use to reduce resistance
📋 Keep your herd healthy and productive

Federal and state regulations require a valid VCPR before veterinarians can prescribe prescription medications or write Veterinary Feed Directives (VFDs).

If it’s been a while since we’ve visited your operation, or you’re adding new animals or expanding your herd, let us know. We’ll be happy to schedule a herd health visit so we can continue providing the care and medications your livestock need.
