As my students and clients know, there are many hills I will die on. Making wet saddle pads or lunging horses to get energy out is one of them.

If a horse is confident and regulated through their nervous system, none of that should be necessary to have a “broke” horse. In fact, all you will have is a tired horse while simultaneously creating a fitter horse with even more energy to work out of their system.

There are many ways to create a confident and regulated horse and that can be a conversation for a later date.

Reggie and I are far from perfect, but today really proved that all of our hard work has paid off. It was our first ride in 8 weeks (I am 3 weeks postpartum) and it was like we never missed a day. I kept it simple and easy, but no lunging or groundwork was necessary for us to have a safe and productive ride. Having confidence and trust in each other made today possible.

This is what I've been preaching for the last couple weeks. The movements might be slow but the quality of learning is still high.

This time of year I hear the same question a lot: *"Isn't it too hot to ride?"*

And sure, sometimes it's just too hot. ...To do *some* things....

If it's 99 degrees with high humidity and your plan is to lope circles for an hour until your horse is dripping sweat, today's probably not the day.

But since when does riding always have to be grueling exercise??
Some of the best lessons I've ever had with a horse happened almost entirely at a walk.

We've spent an hour working on moving one foot at a time. Picking up shoulders. Yielding hips. Softening to the bridle. Sidepassing. Opening gates. Standing quietly. Working on body control. Practicing a posted walk to build muscle. Things that barely raise a horse's heart rate...

The same goes for groundwork.

You can spend an hour teaching a horse to load quietly, stand tied, accept ropes, improve their leading manners, or work through something mentally challenging. Again, low effort activities. You can do them in the shade. You can do them in sun it really wouldn't matter.

I think we do ourselves a disservice when we believe every ride has to leave the horse breathing hard to be worthwhile. Some of the biggest breakthroughs happen when everyone's heart rate stays low enough to think.

Especially in the summer, I don't need my horses coming back to the barn soaked every ride. I need them coming back a little more educated than when they left. And for lessons, I don't need my students thinking learning means speed.

Sometimes education happens at a lope. Sometimes it happens standing completely still.

So, is it too hot to ride? Depends on what you consider riding I guess.

ALL the feelings today.... on my last day of teaching before baby girl makes her appearance! As soon as I'm able, I will slowly start adding lessons to my calendar. I am looking forward to some quiet time with my family but I am going to miss seeing your faces!!! Thank you for your support during this big life transition!!!

Words to live by:

What people think of me is none of my business.

My actions and the happiness of my horses will lead me further in this ridiculously intense industry than anything else.

My relationships with my horses is more important to me than any opinion someone may have and my horses will always come first.

Me and my new friend say please forgive us for any schedule conflicts over the next couple of weeks. Between puppies getting fixed, baby showers, babymoons and teaching Bodywork, the calendar is a little crazy.

Today we did something new! We had a "Fix a Test Show" at home! Every rider rode a dressage test, received feedback and the second time around was the scored/placed test! Everyone did a great job and the feedback was utilized for an amazing second attempt!! Apologies I don't have pictures of everyone!
