Coturnix quail eggs going in the hatcher this week. It's been a while since we've had quail on the farmstead, but we're super excited to harvest some home grown meatbirds for the table in a few weeks!

Love for gardening can be an addiction that takes on a lot of different forms, and the chickens have definitely benefitted from our food and flower gardens over the years. I had figured out years ago that goldfish will eat floating plants that are small enough to fit in their mouths and I used to feed them all of my extra floating plants like Salvinia and red root floaters from our indoor planted aquariums. We sadly shut down our outdoor goldfish pond last fall because of issues we were having with the waterfall and I hate to throw away live healthy plants, so I recently decided to start feeding them to the chickens instead. You can bet the girls don't turn down snacktime in any form.

Beautiful sun-shiny kinda days make for great days to get some farmstead chores done. So thankful for these helpers of mine and everything we accomplished yesterday. Amoungst the most important- hooves are all trimmed and done for another month. ☑️

Sometimes people outside or new to the poultry world just don't understand the work and dedication that can go into raising.. and even more so.. breeding chickens. We've been working with Blue Ameraucana and Copper marans for many years now. So much time, sweat, and tears have gone into building pens, hatching, and culling birds. We breed for egg color and breed standard vs breeding w***y nilly just for a profit. The day we actually make a dollar for raising livestock might never come. We do it for the enjoyment of the breeds and the satisfaction of knowing where our food comes from. 💯 worth it in my book. 🙌
