Thinking About Buying a Doodle, or Poodle Mix?

Have you been told:

* ā€œThey don’t need grooming until they’re a year old.ā€
* ā€œTheir coat is easy to maintain.ā€

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING:

The photo above is an example of a pelted coat, also known as pelting. Pelting occurs when a dog’s coat becomes so severely matted and tangled that it comes off in one solid piece.

Severe matting places constant tension on the skin, can cause painful skin damage and infections, and may leave a dog unable to move comfortably. In extreme cases, it can become a serious welfare issue.

Poodle crosses (Cockapoos, Doodles, Maltipoos, etc.) are not low-maintenance breeds when it comes to coat care.

The attached photo shows how matting forms directly against the skin. Looking at the top coat, you may not see or feel the mats because they are hidden beneath the fluffy outer layer. Once matting reaches this point, it is extremely difficult—if not impossible—to brush out. Even if it could be done, it would be unfair and painful for the dog.

Proper maintenance involves much more than a quick brushing. If you want to keep your dog in the fluffy coat that likely attracted you to a poodle mix in the first place, you should set aside time to thoroughly brush and comb your dog at least 2–3 times per week.

Groomers often hear:

ā€œI know he’s matted, but please leave as much hair as possible.ā€

Unfortunately, you cannot clip through matting—you can only clip under it. As this photo demonstrates, clipping under severe matting often means taking the coat all the way down to the skin.

I promise you, your groomer does not want to do this. Groomers refuse to put dogs through painful de-matting procedures, and they certainly don’t enjoy clients telling others that their dog was ā€œscalped.ā€ However, when a coat is severely matted, there is often no humane alternative.

Instead of being upset with your groomer, please respect their commitment to doing what is in your dog’s best interest. Accept responsibility if home maintenance has fallen behind, and work with your groomer to prevent it from happening again.

Most groomers are happy to demonstrate a technique called line brushing, which can make home grooming much more effective. Just ask—we want owners to succeed.

Poodle crosses are among the highest-maintenance dogs when it comes to coat care. Combining a Poodle coat with other soft-coated breeds often produces a coat that is extremely prone to matting.

If you love a fluffy appearance, plan on scheduling professional grooming every 3–5 weeks and setting aside time for regular brushing and combing at home.

Please also remember: if you bathe your poodle cross, you should blow dry and brush & comb the coat immediately afterward. Moisture from baths, rain, swimming, or snow will worsen matting. If your dog is already matted, bathing will only tighten the mats and make the situation worse. Always brush and comb thoroughly before a bath.

Lastly, breeders who tell buyers that these dogs cannot or should not be clipped, or that they do not need grooming until they are a year old, are doing a disservice to both the puppy and the owner. Those statements often lead to an unfortunate first grooming experience and unnecessary discomfort for the dog.

If this hasn’t discouraged you from purchasing a poodle mix, schedule your puppy’s first grooming appointment shortly after vaccinations are complete, and be prepared to maintain the coat properly between professional grooming appointments.

A fluffy dog is not a low-maintenance dog.
