Many pet owners assume dogs eat grass because they're sick, but that's not usually the case. In fact, most grass-eating dogs show no signs of illness before or after their leafy snack.

Researchers aren't entirely sure why dogs do it, but several theories exist. Some experts believe it's an instinct inherited from their wild ancestors, who consumed plant material as part of their natural diet. Others think dogs simply enjoy the texture, taste, or sensory experience of chewing grass. For some pups, it may be little more than a canine hobby.

The good news? Occasional grass eating is generally considered normal behavior.

The bigger concern isn't the grass itself—it's what may be on it. Lawns can be treated with fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, or other chemicals that may be harmful if ingested. Certain plants and weeds can also be toxic to pets.

When most people think about mosquitoes, they think about itchy bites and ruined backyard evenings. But for our pets, mosquitoes can pose a much more serious threat.

Just one mosquito bite has the potential to transmit heartworms—a potentially life-threatening parasite that can live in a pet's heart, lungs, and blood vessels. Once infected, dogs may not show signs right away, but over time heartworms can cause coughing, fatigue, breathing difficulties, heart disease, and even heart failure.

Cats aren't immune either. While heartworm disease is less common in cats, it can be much harder to diagnose and can cause serious respiratory issues or sudden illness.

Backyard BBQs are a summer favorite, but many common cookout foods and party items can be risky for pets.

Before you fire up the grill, keep these pet safety tips in mind:

🌽 Skip the table scraps. Fatty meats, bones, corn cobs, onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, chocolate, alcohol, and desserts made with xylitol can all be dangerous for pets.

🔥 Keep pets away from the grill. Hot grills, skewers, charcoal, grease drippings, and lighter fluid can cause burns, stomach upset, or serious injury.

🗑️ Secure the trash. Leftover bones, food wrappers, foil, skewers, and corn cobs can be tempting but may lead to choking, intestinal blockages, or emergency surgery.

💧 Provide shade and fresh water. Pets can overheat quickly during outdoor gatherings, especially on hot or humid days.
