GLRS provides a safe haven to abandoned, abused, and neglected domestic rabbits and others. Expect a response within 1-2 days.

If you are interested in adopting, please contact our adoption coordinator at [email protected]. Sanctuary work keeps us very busy, so we may not be able to respond right away. Visiting the Sanctuary: We welcome visitors and are very excited to share the wonders of the sanctuary, however, we are not open to the public on a daily basis. Tours are available by appointment only during the

spring, summer, and early fall. Please email us at least 48 hours in advance to schedule a visit and have us confirm your visit. To help us continue providing a safe haven for the animals, we request a donation of $5.00 per person for tours of the sanctuary. To get involved in volunteering email [email protected]

🎁 On the twelfth day of Bunmas, my bun friends gave to me: 12 Months of Bunnies! 🎁

2025 is drawing to a close, but our mission to provide a safe haven to domestic bunnies and other animals continues all year long! Our work is never just about survival for us here at GLRS-- the rescue is only the beginning. We believe that our job doesn't end until every bunny who makes their way to us finds a family where they can truly thrive, with all the love and care they deserve.

We want to give every animal in our care the forever of their dreams, and to do that we need your help. When you make a recurring gift, you give the bunnies and their friends the gift of stability. Our animals depend on consistent, reliable care, high quality food and enrichment, and rapid and compassionate medical treatment. Recurring gifts ensure that we can continue to say yes to bunnies in need, and give every animal at GLRS the exceptional care they deserve.

Alright, alright, we’ll admit, we have more than eleven exceptional caretakers, but we couldn’t let the season pass without taking a moment to recognize the hard work and devotion of our staff and volunteers.

These are just some of the bunnies kept in their homes thanks to Hop & Help! 🥰

Hop&Help is our no-cost, no-judgement program that aims to keep bunnies with the people who love them. Whether it's supplies, knowledge, or compassionate support, Hop&Help was created to bridge the gap between the overwhelming need for domestic rabbit rescue and the limited resources and physical space available in local shelters. We provide essential supplies and education to bunny families in need, allowing more bunnies to stay in their loving homes.

🎁 On the ninth day of Bunmas, my bun friends gave to me: Nine Pigs a’Wallowing 🎁

We may be Great Lakes Rabbit Sanctuary, but we’ve had pigs with us from the very beginning. In fact, we used to be named Pighoppers! Today, in addition to our bunnies, we’re also home to 9 pigs, 4 goats, and 2 cats.

Our pigs and goats are true sanctuary animals. Once they make their way to us, they’ve got a home for life. We have a dedicated barn for our pigs, and another for our goats, where they’re cared for (and spoiled) by our devoted staff.

Pigs and goats are social animals, and ours love playing with their friends, cuddling together, and even getting into mischief! (Jareth the goat, and Simon the pig, we’re looking at you!) Don’t worry though, no matter how much funny business these guys get up to, they’re always on our nice list!

You may have heard that our biggest resident, Henry the pig, is currently facing some health challenges. Medical care for large animals is very specialized, just like it is for bunnies, and with your help, we can continue to provide Henry and all of his friends at GLRS the care and treatments they need to thrive. 🎁 On the eighth day of Bunmas, my bun friends gave to me: Eight Marvelous Mullets! 🎁

Business in the front, and party in the back– if you know, then you know! In case you’ve somehow missed out on the glorious manes and magnificent attitude that come with these flowing locks, today we’d like to introduce you to the lionheads! 💇‍♀️

Lionheads are a special breed of bunny named for the long fur that grows in a mane-like ruff around their necks. Some of these cuties have little fluffy skirts too!! All of them need some help grooming to keep their flowing locks in tip-top shape, and most of them bring a charming diva attitude to go with the hair. You’ll never be the boss again with a lionhead in the house– these guys know exactly what they want and are happy to let you know it!

🎁 On the seventh day of Bunmas, my bun friends gave to me: Seven Snowy Coats! 🎁

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! Snow-white bunnies, that is! ☃

Just like their black-furred friends, all white bunnies also tend to have long waits for their forever families, especially if they’re an extra-special kind of white bunny known as a REW, or red-eyed white.

Personally, we think their ruby eyes are beautiful– like twinkly little gems! But unfortunately, many people find them scary. Can you imagine finding these sweet faces frightening? We sure can’t! One look at Vermillion’s flowing locks and shining eyes and we were smitten! It takes a truly handsome man to look that good in a mullet, and he’s totally giving rockstar.

Vermillion and his white-furred buddies are hoping there are families out there who appreciate their snowy coats and sparkly eyes, but in the meantime, you can help us keep them healthy, happy and cozy!

🎁 On the sixth day of Bunmas, my bun friends gave to me: Six Snuggly Sisters! 🎁

The best things come in threes! Or at least that’s what these girls think! Azalea, Marigold, and Zinnia, and Maize, Jade, and Magenta are two delightful trios, waiting for families with hearts big enough to love them all.

Most people assume caring for multiple bunnies is more difficult than caring for one, but really the opposite is true! Sure, they need a little more space, but bunnies are social creatures, and most buns love having companions to snuggle and play with. Both of these trios were born right here at GLRS. As they grew up, we realized that the sisters were inseparable! We always respect our bunnies’ choices, so when these ladies told us they needed their whole girl crew forever, we agreed!

Today, we’d like to take a moment to appreciate the SPLOOT. A sploot is the ultimate bunny expression of trust and comfort. When you see that fluffy butt stretched out in all its glory, you can be confident you’re looking at a bunny who’s loving life!

🎁 On the fourth day of Bunmas, my bun friends gave to me: Four Black Beauties! 🎁

We’ve got our own little “onyx storm” brewing here at GLRS– and we aren’t talking about dragons! Just look at these beautiful black bunnies! We don’t know why, but black bunnies always end up waiting longer than their spotted and brown buddies to find their homes. Is it because they’re like looking into tiny fuzzy black holes? Are they channeling their inner goth? Are they just intimidatingly gorgeous? Whatever it is, these sweet bunnies want you to know that they’re full of binkies, nose boops, and joyful zoomies, and they’re ready to bring their stunning good looks to a forever family who can appreciate their beauty and charm!

And until that happens, Oleander, Lupin, Riley, Jewel, and all their bunny buddies have a home with GLRS! We commit to every animal in our care for their whole life, or until our bunnies find their perfect adopter. 🎁 On the third day of Bunmas, my bun friends gave to me: Three Lop Ears! 🎁

Lop ears are bunny ears that hang down instead of standing up, and between them, Perdita and Jolly Roger have three adorable lop ears! (Jolly Roger couldn’t decide which he liked better, so he’s got one of each!) And that’s not all they have in common– both of them arrived at GLRS in need of specialized care. Perdita had just given birth in very stressful circumstances, and then had been separated from her babies by poorly-informed but well-meaning people. She needed a quiet, private place to reconnect with her babies and feel safe, and lucky for her, that’s one of the things GLRS does best!

Jolly Roger was abandoned outside when his family moved, and brought to us by kind neighbors, but not before he’d suffered a catastrophic injury to his eye that became infected. He needed a safe place to recover from the infection and a surgery to remove his eye and save his life.

Both Perdita and Jolly Roger (and Perdita’s babies!) made full recoveries, and they are happy, friendly, sassy little lops ready for their forever families! We need your help to continue to provide a safe haven and essential medical care for bunnies with special needs. 🎁 On the second day of Bunmas, my bun friends gave to me: Two Cozy Buddies! 🎁

Two buns are better than one, and here at GLRS we have our very own bromance. Sunshine and Shade are best friends who’ve been through a lot together. Sunshine was surrendered years ago when he was still a youngster, and didn’t wait long to be adopted. That wasn’t the end of his story though. Earlier this year, he was surrendered back to us when his person could no longer care for him, and this time he wasn’t alone! Sunshine brought his best friend Shade with him, and these two sweet seniors are truly inseparable. We’re grateful they’ve got each other while they wait for their forever home, because senior bunnies like these little bros are all too often overlooked. Sunshine and Shade have so much love to give, and these sweet, silly bunny boys are ready to find their family. While they wait, you can help us keep them busy, happy and cared for!
