It balled my eyes out to my client’s horse today. I hadn’t seen this client’s horses since December, partly because the weather this winter was absolutely terrible, but also because the prices of everything have gone up and I don’t blame people for cutting their horse training budget when everything is costing so much these days. But I was so excited to be back with these two fjords. I’ve been working with them since the fall of 2024 and I’ve seen them grow so much. whenever I haven’t seen a horse for a while I always choose to observe and ask for less on my first day back as I’m always looking for subtle signs of energy looking for how they’re feeling and trying to get the feedback of how they feel about the work that we do together and what we should do next and this time I could see her eyes peering at me through the stall door, and as I haltered her up and brought her out. I could tell she was excited to be with me. I groomed her. She was very itchy from shedding, and as I started to lead her out to walk her around the farm, I could tell that she was excited to be with me as we walked in the woods. She was calm and the fear that I can usually see in her eyes wasn’t there today and as we were walking, I realized that I was getting a feeling like she was communicating to me that she missed me and she was glad I was back and I felt the same way and as we were walking up the hill to this beautiful little forest cove where there are downed logs that we do our pole work with I started bawling. I stood in the middle of the circle with the downed trees and rocky ledge covered in lichen and moss and I just ugly cried to this beautiful horse and we just stood there peacefully together like it was the most normal thing like two friends sharing a moment and after a few minutes, I pulled myself together and continued on with the training session, but it’s sticking with me the fact that I completely emotionally unloaded on this horse, and the horse was super into it and I had this feeling that perhaps some of those tears were actually hers as well and that we were crying because we were happy to be together again

Now that Spring is finally here, I wanted to take an opportunity to talk a little bit about what we do at Iron Ledge Farm My name is Jessie Dowling and I run Iron Ledge Farm in Whitefield Maine. After nearly two decades as a cheesemaker and sheep and goat farmer I took a huge leap into my true passion, which is working and connecting with horses. After training for and completing longest horse race in the world, the Mongol Derby, in 2023, I decided to sell my cheese business and start a small training program in midcoast Maine. I offer lessons and training focused on connection and relationship building with horses though breathwork and groundwork. My focus is on getting horses comfortable on trail and conditioning for endurance riding for both the human and the horse. I offer three day retreats in beautiful locations all over the state of Maine including Acadia, Aroostook County and Downeast that are perfect for folks wanting to dip their toe into endurance but don’t know where to start. I also offer training for folks that are embarking on bigger rides, want to ride on rides in other countries and get ready or want to train for something big like the Mongol Derby. I also have a limited number of spots for training board horses and can help with starting, getting your horse comfortable on the trail and getting your horse fit for endurance, I’m also good at helping horses with problems like mounting and trailer loading. I rent space in an indoor arena in West Gardner for the times when the trails are too icy and muddy. I would love to pick up a few new clients. So please get in touch if you are interested in learning more.

This spring I am excited to guide a new cohort of horse curious individuals through a series of unmounted classes connecting with horses. Have you always wanted to spend time with horses but never knew how to start? Intimidated about riding or the steep cost of lessons? We will begin with a focus on nervous system regulation through grounding and breathwork. We will also be learning about how to read a horse’s body language and begin to learn how to communicate with horses though non-verbal and energetic methods. We will be starting at the beginning and learning how to move safely around horses including grooming and leading and some groundwork skills. These classes are designed for folks with little to no prior horse experience. There are no age or weight limits for these classes and there will be no ridden activities. Classes are limited to no more than 4 people. The cost of the class is $140 ($35/class). I have two available times to choose from: Wednesdays at 6pm and Saturdays at 4pm.

Wednesday class 3/18, 3/25, 4/1, 4/8
Saturday class 3/21, 3/28, 4/4, 4/11 To book your spot visit: https://www.ironledgefarm.com/book

My friend Micaiah is visiting for the weekend. He’s also a horse trainer and I met him training for the 2023 Mongol Derby. We’re headed up to for the weekend to check out the trails with my two green Arabians Zahra and Geralt of Rivia. It will be Geralt’s first camping adventure and I’m really excited to get some miles on him. Since Micaiah arrived a little early I asked him if he would join me to work with my fjord clients and check out my work with the young fjord Thor Bjorn that I started and to help me work through some sticky spots with him, I work alone most of the time so it is so valuable for me to get another experienced person’s feedback on my training. It was also the first itime someone other than myself rode Thorbjorn and it was a super productive training session!
