Yesterday, Twirl was not promised today. Her little body was too weak to fight off the upper respiratory infection that had turned into pneumonia. She had until 7pm last night to find a rescue.

Thankfully, one of our amazing fosters drove to Chicago Animal Care and Control and picked her up at 6:30 last night.

This morning, Twirl was brought to Heartland and was treated by our medical team. After an exam and chest X-rays, it was clear that she needed more intensive care than we could provide, including oxygen, IV antibiotics, and overnight monitoring.

To save time when Twirl arrived at the ER, our technicians placed her catheter (in the car, in the rain!). Then, Twirl was off to Veterinary Emergency Group, where she’s in excellent hands.

Once she’s eating on her own and no longer needs supplemental oxygen, her foster will be welcoming her back with open arms.

Twirl has a long road of recovery ahead of her, but we know this Chicago dog is a fighter. And we will be there to support her every step of the way.

The proceeds from this event go directly towards helping the animals at Heartland find their forever homes.

Some dogs are just built differently.

Maybe it's something in the Chicago air. Maybe it's the resilience that comes from surviving things no dog should have to endure. Whatever it is, Garnet has it.

When we met Garnet at Chicago Animal Care and Control in February 2025, his future was uncertain. He'd been surrendered because his family could no longer afford his care. Before that? We don't know. His story has gaps, but we do know he spent time on the streets, and we know he arrived to us carrying years of untreated medical issues. Despite having every reason to be shut down, scared, or angry at the world, Garnet greeted everyone with a wagging tail and a smile.

That's the thing about Chicago dogs. They don't quit.

Over the last year, Garnet has endured more vet visits, tests, biopsies, treatments, and setbacks than most dogs will experience in a lifetime. He found a home, lost it through no fault of his own, and started over again. Through every challenge, every appointment, and every change in scenery, Garnet remained exactly who he's always been: joyful, social, gentle, and easy to love.

Today, his skin issues are finally under control, and he feels good…Really good! If you met him today, you would never know how many challenges he has overcome to make it here.

Garnet is a dog who loves people and dogs. Garnet is a dog who can nap while you work, stroll through the neighborhood, sunbathe in the yard, and charm every person he meets.

You'd see a dog who refuses to let his past define him.

You'd see a Chicago dog 💪

Garnet has spent too much of his life in temporary places. Now he's looking for the one thing he's never truly had: a real forever home.
After everything he's overcome, we think he's earned it. ❤️

What a week to be a Heartland animal! Not only did we just come off the high of Heartland's Walk of L❤️ve but this week also brought some amazing adoption news for a few of our wonderful Chicago dogs and some very deserving cats who finally found their forever homes. We are on CLOUD 9. 🥹🩵🐱

And the good news keeps coming! We are thrilled to be partnering with The Rosenthal Family Foundation this summer on something really special. From now through July 31st, adoption fees will be completely waived for dogs 40 lbs or more from Chicago Animal Care and Control. 💛🐶

Meet Gwen! This 10-month-ole cutie ventured up here all the way from Alabama. She was part of a litter of six that were saved from a shelter outside of Birmingham, and taken in by a kind foster. We previously welcomed two of their sisters, who were just as sweet and petite, and of course were adopted quickly! We hope Gwen's stay is just as short! 💛

Gwen is Miss Popular. She is the life of the party, the first one on the dance floor! Gwen greets everyone like they are her long lost bestie, and somehow makes you feel like you are the only one she truly loves. We love that she is the perfect size for snuggling up to, or taking on all sorts of summer adventures (which, naturally, she is game for!). We hope you will hurry in to meet this special girl with the sparkling personality (and good looks, too!). Surely she will not last long.
