Opossums are one of the most misunderstood and unwelcome animals on the planet, usually because of the way they look. In spite of that, they are one my favorite creatures on the planet. Here's why.

Meet mama Ada. She'll make you actually like opossums.Check out Ada's story: https://www.instagram.com/wild_by_nurture/

Just a reminder that my property manager and I are still looking for a forever home for a 9 year old Labradoodle. Her owner moved to S. Korea and couldn't take the dog with her. She is doing fine with Eric in a temporary situation but his daughter unfortunately has allergies. The owner does not want the dog to end up in a shelter so we are looking for a loving home for her. If you have any interest or know someone who does, call me at 563-528-9097. Thanks

I love stories about animals who get a second chance at a happy life. Like this sweet story about Piggie. A little sad at first but be patient for the perfect ending.

This video tugs at my heart because of the rider's kindness and the gentle response of the lost monkey. Primates are one of the few exotics that I haven't worked with but I always loved the different varieties of Lemurs and Spider monkeys and their athletic abilities and mannerisms. So much like us, or is it the other way around? I think the latter, on our good days.

Having written an article a while back about people who generously adopted huge numbers of dogs, cats, rabbits and birds from shelters around the country during this endless pandemic, my fears were that many of those fortunate animals would sadly be returned due to economic reasons driven by work and housing issues. According to an article that I recently read, this is now a reality for a number of Chicago no-kill shelters who's intake numbers are up dramatically. They are struggling to find room at their facilities and with foster care for the increasing amount of returned pets.

I certainly sympathize with anyone who is worried about feeding their family ( including long term or newly adopted animals ), losing their place of residence or paying increased rent. I've struggled mightily for two years to keep this business and my chosen life afloat, and to continue to give my pals the same standard of care that they're used to. My work depends on my customer's travels, but my animals always come first. They eat before I do, whatever it takes. But that's me. Doing the best that you can for your devoted friend is what really matters.

My point once again is to encourage everyone to exhaust all of the avenues available before making the fateful decision to return your new best friend to a place that they never want to see again. Any shelter worth their salt would rather try to help you keep your pet at home rather than return them to an already overcrowded facility. I know of at least one animal food bank in the Chicago region and there may be more. They're doing their best to feed as many family pets as possible. Times are tough at the moment but hopefully, this pandemic will end soon. Until then, please do everything you can to keep your residence the forever home that you promised it would be!

For those of you who are visiting my business page for the first time, I've included a number of videos that I found to be beautiful, heartwarming, hilarious, and educational. Hopefully, you'll agree. I've also written a few short articles that I hope will prove to be useful for you and your pet. My extensive animal care history (available on my website - https://www.theanimalkeeperpetsitting.com/) has provided me with an amazing opportunity to work with hundreds of exotic and domesticated species from all corners of the animal kingdom.

I'm always happy to talk to anyone about issues with their pets or just animals in general. I don't claim to know it all but I've been around some pretty cool creatures over the years. Call me anytime. 563-528-9097 (Steve Hanssen)

Just a reminder that I've never required a long advance notice for my services as some folks do. That has made for some very busy days over the years but I will always go out of my way to help anyone who needs it. I understand that some travel decisions can be last-minute undertakings, so don't let the arrangements for your animals create stress. Give me a ring and I'll be there when you need me. No worries.
