As we get closer to lesson time, I am having my kids help me get Sprinkles and Bella tuned up. These two ponies have done many miles of trails and quite a few shows. We sure enjoy them. We also added a new pony to our herd. RJ, Ronnie for Long is our youngest daughter's confidence builder. We have only had him for a week and Faye is already showing improvement. She has been fearful of horses once close to them. She loves them from a distance and wants to get close until the turn their head. Ronnie is small so she feels more comfortable with him.

Winter will be over in a few more weeks and I am more than ready! I am looking forward to nice weather and hoping to add a lot of trail miles Onyx. Shelby is dreaming of smoother rides of Cookie which means Faye can ride Sprinkles on lead. Sawyer is hoping to hit the trails with Moon. TJ says he is riding Ally. And, Liam may put some miles on Bella if everyone else is riding. Come on spring!!

Shelby repurposed a dress she already had into a fairy costume so we then needed to take pictures with ponies!

Does two miles make him a trail horse?! Onyx went out on the trail this evening. He did great! He balked a little at a ditch and got a little going down a small but steep hill. We made it through though! Longer rides are coming.

We finally got to go to a show this weekend!! The girls were glad that this one did not get rained out. Both of them did great. I took Onyx to give him the experience and showed him in model. He got second. Shelby beat me so she was thrilled. Silly girl. I am very pleased with how he behaved. He acted like he had already been out and about hundreds of times even though this was a first! The only thing he did was paw the trailer so I held him the rest of the night. Shelby also got her buckle from last year!

I have been working on consistent movement and head set with Onyx as well as transferring yielding his hind and forequarters to the saddle. I would say he is making great progress! I am mostly still working in the round pen but have taken him on the arena as well. Next week will start more arena work in preparation of our Green Broke Thrill ride! My sister is bringing her green broke mare up so we can do our first trail ride together.

Day 21. I have ridden Onyx on the arena a few times now. He is doing quite well. We are getting the basics down and working on backing, yielding hind and fore, and sidepassing from the saddle. I am asking him to walk on out instead of just plodding along. Over this next week, I will start asking him to trot as well. Check out his little ear flip!

Well, I guess it is official. I rode Onyx on the arena! Fourteen days since we brought him to the farm. Twelve days of work with two rest days. I would say he has progressed quite well.

I rode Onyx yesterday on day 12 and again today on day 13. Both times have been in the roundpen. Today I got on him and rode him without my mom in the round pen for assistance. I put on my boots today so that makes it a more official ride, unofficially. If I move to the arena tomorrow, I will call it an official ride. I am not sure that I am that confident yet. I am pleased with his progress and look forward to my posts being about gait progression as well as new skills.
