New York City’s largest animal shelter hit a sad milestone.

Animal Care Centers of New York City announced on July 18 that its three shelters stopped accepting dogs, cats, bunnies and other critters, except in emergencies.

Even with the shelter practically bursting at the seams, the staff made exceptions. Weinstock said after they made the announcement to suspend intakes, 200 animals were accepted into their shelters that were either a public safety risk or sent by city agencies. The situation is so dire that New York City stepped in Friday with $1 million to help ACC.

In Arizona, animal shelter operators are finding pets abandoned in parking lots or on the side of the road. In Virginia, an over-capacity shelter has taken to social media to call for adoptions urgently. And in Tennessee, one shelter said it is “drowning” in rescue dogs, forced to stack kennels on top of each other to provide space.

❣️ Hi! My name is Kona & I'm an adorable 5-year old female beagle mix! I weigh about 30 lbs. I love to sit on the sofa with my people & to sleep in bed with them at night! I love to sleep under the blanket! I'm a playful girl! I love to play ball, tug-of-war & fetch! I'm housetrained - I will sit by the door when I need to go outside. I've lived with older children & should be fine with children who are 7 or 8 or older (& who know how to treat a dog properly). I love cats & will sleep next to them if they'll let me! I've lived with a dog, & I was very good with her. However, I get excited around dogs I don't know, & need to be slowly introduced. I enjoy car rides, although I can be rambunctious. I have some separation anxiety. I need a new home because my people worked 8 hour shifts & I can be destructive if left alone that long. When I'm alone that long, I'll eat things I shouldn't & tear things apart. However, I've always been fine without my people if they are away for shorter periods of time, like about 3 hours. I am not crate trained & don't do well in the crate for long periods of time. The best way to get me to listen/obey is by using praise & treats. I'm already up-to-date on vaccines. I will be spayed before I'm adopted. Please think about giving me a forever home! I can't wait to be part of a family!

🔊 Aaaarrrroooo, adoptable Rock Star here, with a BIG announcement!! Thank you to everyone who donated, shared, came to the picnic, walked their pups, and our sponsors! Palooza in July was a huge SUCCESS 🙌

🥰 With YOUR help, we raised our $3,500 goal... which is critical! These funds should help us with roughly 7 spays!!

We're taking in an unprecedented number of unspayed or neutered beagles (over a dozen now 😱). We'll have Beagle Palooza in November - and sponsorships anytime!
