This is pyometra — a serious, life-threatening infection of the uterus that occurs in unspayed female dogs and cats.

After a heat cycle, hormonal changes can allow bacteria to enter the uterus. The uterus can then fill with pus and infection, which can quickly lead to sepsis and organ failure if left untreated.

Common signs may include:
• lethargy
• decreased appetite
• vomiting
• increased thirst and urination
• vaginal discharge
• abdominal swelling

However, some pets show very subtle symptoms until the infection becomes severe.

🚨 Pyometra is a medical emergency and often requires emergency surgery to remove the infected uterus. If left untreated, pyometra can be fatal.

The good news: pyometra is completely preventable with a spay. Spaying removes the uterus and ovaries, eliminating the risk of this dangerous infection and helping protect your pet’s long-term health.

If you notice any of these signs, contact your veterinarian right away.
