From the eBook "Animal Trainer's Comprehensive Handbook" by Agnieszka Janarek:

In the past, the term "command" was commonly
used, but now we refer to it as a "cue" or "cue
word." The language we use significantly
impacts how we perceive our work with animals.
The words we choose and how we communicate
have immense significance! In the world of dog training,
there has been a significant shift
from using "commands" to using "cues".
A command is seen as something that must
be executed without question, leaving no room
for disobedience. On the other hand, a "cue"
is a hint, a prompt, a dialogue. If we provide
a "cue" and our dog doesn't respond, it is less
likely that we will label it as disobedience.

Before teaching our dogs complex behaviors and advanced concepts, we must show them how to learn.

This eBook focuses on one of the most important skills our dogs need during training: FOCUS.

However, let’s take a moment to think about it.

• What is FOCUS?
• What does it look like?
• Is it tangible?
• How do you know you have it?

After reading this eBook, you will be able to answer all of the above questions. We will operationalize attention and define its component parts. I will show you how to prepare an errorless training session, define your dog’s focus, measure it, and add more elements to your training. In my experience, most caregivers experience issues during training because they have not taught their dogs the attention contingency – our “focus bubble.” We can’t teach anything if our animals don’t have the necessary skill of how to learn. If your dog looks around during training, sniffs, doesn’t respond to your recall, looks at you instead of circling the cone, or is interested in everything around them but you – this eBook is for you.

YOU NEED THIS EBOOK IF:

• Your dog quickly gives up working with you, easily gets distracted, and appears to be “unmotivated to work.”
• You want to learn and understand why this is happening and what you can do about it.
• You want to use only positive methods, even if it takes you out of your comfort zone.
• You want to be the best trainer your dog can have!

The Dogwise warehouse hosted an AKC Detective Dog test for the Wenatchee Kennel Club this week. Who knew that boxes of books, wooden pallets and our large open basement would be such a great place to test!

WKC instructor, Carla Slabaugh, set up the test. You might recognize Carla and her Vizsla from the cover of the Dogwise title “From Bird-Brained to Brilliant” about how to succeed in training sporting dogs to be great companions. It was fun to see these super-smart dogs in action.

Linda with Poodle GiGi
Betsy with Rhodesian Ridgeback Zenyatta
Suzanne with Vizsla Astrid
Pam with Australian Shepherd Austin
Tara with All American Iskie
Linda with German Shepherd Angel
Rich with Springer Spaniel Cedar
Cassandra with All American Dixie

NEW BOOK: Puppy Kindergarten: The New Science of Raising a Great Dog by Brian Hare and Vanessa Wood is now available at Dogwise.com

What does it take to raise a great dog? This was the question that husband-and-wife team Brian Hare and Vanessa Woods hoped to answer when they enrolled one hundred and one puppies in the Duke Puppy Kindergarten. With the help of a retired service dog named Congo, Brian, Vanessa, and their team set out to understand the secrets of the puppy mind: What factors might predict whether a puppy will grow up to change someone’s life?

Never has cuteness been so cutting edge. Applying the same games that psychologists use when exploring the development of young children, Hare and Woods uncover what happens in a puppy’s mind during their final stage of rapid brain development. Follow the adventures of Arthur, who makes friends with toy dinosaurs; Wisdom, the puppy genius; and Ying, who fails at cognitive games that even pigeons usually pass with flying colors. Along the way, learn about when puppies finally start to retain memories for longer than just a few seconds, or when they finally develop some self-control.

Raising dozens of puppies on a college campus means you get pretty good at answering big questions, such as: When do puppies sleep through the night? How do you stop them from eating p**p? How can we help our puppies grow up to be the best dogs they can possibly be? Whether you are a new puppy parent or a perennial puppy lover, Puppy Kindergarten will answer every question you’ve ever had about puppies—and some you never thought to ask.
