A positive first ride is essential to having a well rounded horse - when we first get on a young on I constantly remind myself to constantly practice pressure and release with every sign of acknowledgment. Starting colts and being able to put the first couple of rides on one is truly magic, they can tell you everything you need to know about how they’re going to be as a riding horse. Some will be reactive and jumpy to everything new, some will be stiff and deadheaded, and my personal favorites are the ones that are soft and willing to try new but they will always keep you on your toes.
