🐾 Boe's Board & Train 🐾

Boe is here working on impulse control and confidence-building, and it has been so much fun watching him grow! This sweet cattle dog mix came to us needing a little help slowing down, making thoughtful choices, and feeling more confident in new situations.

Over the past week, Boe has been learning that training can be rewarding and enjoyable. As his confidence has increased, we've seen him become more engaged, more willing to try new things, and more enthusiastic about working with his trainer. Next week, we'll begin transferring these skills to his family through private training sessions so they can continue building on his success at home.

Every dog is different, and Boe's journey is a great example of how a customized training plan can help dogs develop the skills they need to thrive.

GROWING PUPPIES NEED MOVEMENT, NOT MARATHONS 🐾

One of the most common mistakes we see with growing puppies comes from a good place…

People want to give them plenty of exercise.

The problem is that more exercise is not always better exercise.

Large breed puppies have growth plates that remain open much longer than most people realize. During this stage, their bones, joints, and soft tissues are still developing, making them more vulnerable to injury from excessive repetitive impact.

What we LOVE to see:
✔ Free play
✔ Exploring new environments
✔ Swimming
✔ Natural movement
✔ Confidence-building adventures

What we try to avoid in growing puppies:
⚠ Forced running
⚠ Long-distance jogging
⚠ Repetitive jumping
⚠ Excessive retrieves
⚠ Repetitive stair climbing

One thing that makes retrievers unique is that many of them will continue working long after they should stop. They love retrieving, running, swimming, and being part of the action. It becomes our responsibility to know their limits while they’re still growing.

Research consistently shows that maintaining a healthy body weight during growth can significantly reduce orthopedic stress and help support long-term joint health.

The goal isn’t to keep puppies inactive.

The goal is to provide the RIGHT kind of activity at the RIGHT stage of development.

Move them.
Don’t overdo them.
Protect their growth.
Invest in their future. 🐾

A huge congratulations to all of our amazing Bell Creek teams during our local Memorial Weekend trial! Some have been with us from the very beginning, and others joined us along the way—but every single one of you has been an important part of our journey.

This weekend brought Double QQs, numerous new titles, and even a PACH! 🎉🐾 What incredible accomplishments!

But what makes me the proudest isn't just the ribbons, titles, or qualifying scores. It's seeing every team step into the ring focused on improving, building confidence, strengthening skills, and becoming better partners with their dogs. Success looks different for everyone, and each team showed dedication, perseverance, and growth.

Thank you for your hard work, commitment, and for representing Bell Creek with such sportsmanship and heart. Watching you achieve your goals—and chase new ones—is why we do what we do.

Ick. But we knew they are here. :(

Found on a local anchorage pet just 1 day ago. Yup, it's a tick. It will be sent to the state vet office for identification and possible infectious disease testing. The family was hiking near flattop in Anchorage and this little gem was found hours later. The pet has NOT been outside of Anchorage. I'm sorry to tell you that ticks ARE in Alaska. Please consider talking to your vet about whether flea/tick prevention is right for your pet.
