Today we got handed some lemons, so we made lemonade… and s’mores! The horses were already vetted, so the only logical thing we could think to do while waiting for help was to have a little fun! Thanks to AAA and Brown’s Towing for helping some ponies get home safely! 🍋☘️✨

Great views of the lesser curvature in the equine stomach✨

Although we have posted this series over several parts, this whole process takes about 10-15 minutes when the horse is properly fasted. We can only perform gastroscopy when a horse has been kept off all food for 12-16 hours. This means that this procedure must be planned in advance to be able to fully visualize all parts of your horse’s stomach!

We have finally made it into the stomach! Here’s a first look at what the inside of your horse’s stomach looks like. In this video, we can see the squamous mucosa and glandular mucosa and the separation between the two. Different ulcers are found in these two locations, so different medications are needed to treat them.

This is a great video of the upper airway (the pharynx) in a horse. All of these parts work in harmony to allow your horse to breathe well when doing their job. If one of these part isn’t functioning normally, you may notice exercise intolerance or abnormal noises when working. It can be evaluated with a bronchoscope after exercise, or sometimes even during exercise!
