๐Ÿ”ฌ๐Ÿพ Behind the Scenes at Steel Veterinary Services ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ”ฌ

Ever wonder what your veterinarian is looking at under the microscope when your pet has an ear infection?

Here's Dr. Bob carefully examining an ear cytology (ear swab)โ€”one of the most important diagnostic tests we perform for pets with itchy, painful, smelly, or infected ears.

๐Ÿ‘‚ Why is an ear swab so important?
Looking inside the ear tells us that inflammation is present, but an ear cytology helps us determine what's causing it. Under the microscope, we can identify:
๐Ÿฆ  Bacteria
๐Ÿ„ Yeast (Malassezia)
๐Ÿ”ฌ Inflammatory cells
๐Ÿพ Occasionally ear mites or other abnormalities

This allows us to choose the right medication instead of simply guessing. Ear cytology is also valuable for monitoring how well treatment is working and deciding whether changes are needed.

๐Ÿ’™ At Steel Veterinary Services, we believe diagnostics matter. Taking a few extra minutes to examine an ear swab helps us provide the most effective treatment for your pet and can reduce recurrent ear infections by targeting the actual cause.

Because behind every microscope is a veterinarian dedicated to getting the right answers for your best friend. โค๏ธ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ

โš ๏ธ RABIES ALERT โ€” WASHINGTON, PA โš ๏ธ

The Pennsylvania Department of Health has confirmed that a rabid gray fox was found in the area of Elmhurst Drive in Washington, PA, on August 11, 2026.

We are sharing this important local alert as a reminder that rabies is present in our community, and protecting our pets against this deadly disease is extremely important.

๐Ÿพ Please make sure your pets are current on their rabies vaccinations.

As stated in the Pennsylvania Department of Health notice:
โ€œMake sure that ALL pets (dogs, cats, ferrets) that can be, are up to date with the rabies vaccine.โ€

Even pets that live primarily or exclusively indoors can potentially be exposed to rabies. Bats and other wildlife can enter homes, garages, and enclosed areas, and an indoor pet can unexpectedly escape outdoors.

Rabies is a serious public-health concern because it can affect both animals and people. Prevention through appropriate vaccination is one of the most important protections we have.

If your pet has potentially had contact with a bat, fox, raccoon, skunk, or other wild animal, avoid handling the wild animal and contact your veterinarian for guidance. If a person has been bitten or has had another potentially significant exposure, please follow the Pennsylvania Department of Health instructions included in the attached alert.

If you are unsure whether your pet is currently protected against rabies, please check your vaccination records or contact your veterinarian.

A note regarding our hospital policy:

For the safety of our patients, clients, doctors, and staff, Steel Veterinary Services requires pets to be appropriately vaccinated against rabies as required by Pennsylvania law, unless a veterinarian has determined that a recognized medical exemption applies.

Because our veterinary team must have direct physical contact with patients for examinations, treatments, restraint, blood collection, procedures, and other medical care, we reserve the right to decline non-emergency services when an owner refuses to comply with rabies vaccination requirements.

This policy is not intended to punish or inconvenience anyone.

Rabies is a fatal zoonotic disease and represents an occupational safety concern for veterinary professionals who work directly with animals every day. Protecting our team, our patients, and our community must remain a priority.

A Message to Our Clients & Community ๐Ÿพ

At Steel Veterinary Services, our team comes to work each day with one goal: to provide compassionate, professional care to our patients and respectful service to the people who love them.

We understand that veterinary visits can sometimes be stressful, emotional, or frustrating. We also understand that wait times can occasionally occur when our doctors and medical team are caring for another patient who requires additional attention.
What we cannot accept is abusive, threatening, or intimidating behavior toward our staff.

Effective immediately, Steel Veterinary Services will maintain a zero-tolerance policy for harassment, intimidation, threats, aggressive behavior, or verbal abuse directed toward any member of our team. This includes, but is not limited to:
Yelling, screaming at, insulting, or degrading employees
Throwing money, paperwork, objects, or other items at staff
Threatening or intimidating employees.

Aggressive or disruptive behavior within the hospital
Threatening online retaliation, social-media attacks, or public โ€œbashingโ€ as a means of intimidating staff, coercing an outcome, avoiding legitimate charges, or retaliating against an employee for enforcing hospital policies.

We absolutely respect every client's right to express an honest opinion or raise a legitimate concern about their experience. What we will not accept is the use of threats of online retaliation as a weapon against employees who are simply performing their jobs or enforcing established hospital policies.

Clients who engage in abusive, threatening, intimidating, or seriously disruptive behavior may have their veterinary-client-patient relationship terminated in accordance with applicable professional and legal requirements and may be asked to leave the premises.

If behavior becomes threatening, intimidating, or creates a safety concern for our staff, clients, or patients, law enforcement may be contacted.

Our employees deserve to come to work without being screamed at, threatened, intimidated, humiliated, or subjected to abusive behavior. Protecting our team is part of maintaining a safe environment in which they can focus on what matters most โ€” caring for our patients.

We will always welcome respectful questions, concerns, and conversations. We are happy to discuss a bill, explain a policy, address a concern, or work through a disagreement professionally.

Disagreement is acceptable. Honest feedback is acceptable. Abuse, intimidation, and threats are not.

This expectation also applies to our social media pages. Abusive, threatening, harassing, defamatory, or personally attacking comments directed toward our doctors, staff, clients, or practice will not be tolerated. This includes comments from individuals who are not clients of Steel Veterinary Services and who have no firsthand experience with our practice. Such comments may be removed, and individuals who engage in harassment or abusive behavior may be blocked from our social media platforms.

We sincerely appreciate the overwhelming majority of our clients who treat our doctors and staff with kindness and respect. We are grateful for the trust you place in us and for allowing us to care for your animals.

Respect goes both ways โ€” and at Steel Veterinary Services, it is required.

Comments on this post have been closed to prevent unrelated discussions, personal attacks, and commentary that does not pertain to the purpose of this post. This decision was also made to protect our clients from being targeted, confronted, or attacked by individuals who are not clients of our practice and have no firsthand involvement in their care or experiences with our hospital. Legitimate concerns regarding your petโ€™s care are always welcome and may be addressed directly with our practice. Our goal is to maintain a respectful and safe environment for our clients, staff, and communityโ€”both inside our hospital and on our social media platforms.

๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’— MEET THE STAFF: KAYDA ๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿพ

Some members of our team grow right along with us โ€” and Kayda is one of them!

Kayda first joined the Steel Veterinary Services family while she was still in high school, and we've had the pleasure of watching her grow personally and professionally ever since. Today, she is working toward her Veterinary Technician degree, while continuing to gain hands-on experience right here at the clinic. ๐Ÿฉบ๐Ÿพ

One of the things we appreciate most about Kayda is her patience and gentle, caring nature with our patients. Whether she's helping with treatments, assisting our team, or giving a nervous patient a little extra reassurance, she approaches them with kindness and compassion. โค๏ธ

And here's a fun fact about Kaydaโ€ฆ
๐ŸŒธ Her favorite color is PINK! ๐ŸŒธ

If the pink stethoscope, pink watch, pink pants โ€” and even a little pink in her hair โ€” didn't already give it away! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ’—

We are very proud to have Kayda as part of our team and excited to watch her continue learning and growing as she works toward becoming a Veterinary Technician.

Please help us show Kayda some love! ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿพ

Double the kittens, double the fun!

Meet Maverick and Goose, two adorable orange brothers who stopped by Steel Veterinary Services for their visit. While they're cute enough to steal anyone's heart, they also reminded us why we love what we do every single day.

Our patients aren't just appointments on the scheduleโ€”they become part of our family. Whether it's a playful kitten, a curious puppy, or a senior companion, we believe every pet deserves gentle handling, compassionate care, and plenty of love along the way.

We may spend our days performing surgeries, exams, administering vaccines, and discussing treatment plans, but moments like these remind us that the best part of veterinary medicine is the bond we build with our patients.

Thank you, Maverick and Goose, for making our day a little brighter. We can't wait to watch you both grow! ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿฑ
