🚨 Heartbreaking news this week: Record numbers of pets are being surrendered as their owners struggle to afford vet bills and other related epenses.

Shelters are beyond full, forced to stack animals on top of each other And worst of all— for the first time in years euthanasia rates are soaring, with only 50% of shelter pets are making it out alive.

City Dogs & City Kitties Rescue is fighting every day to save animals from these devastating conditions—but we're not immune to the raising cost of pet ownership.

Hi Finn! With his cuddly nature and fun-loving personality, Finn knows how to light up a room. He's eager to please and will let you know just how much he missed you when you walk in the front door, but also knows when it's time to relax in his crate with a chew toy.

Stephanie is the kind of cat who watches the party from the hallway… and honestly? We respect that. Yes, she’s shy. She won’t leap into your arms or meow for attention. But when she starts pawing at your leg for head scratches? When she mashes her face into your hand and sticks around for back pets? That moment hits different. ⁠

Stephanie is low-maintenance and pretty independent. She spends most of the day in her favorite hidey spots (like her sheet-covered cat tree throne). But she’s curious. She occasionally peeks around corners to quietly check in to make sure you're still around, and sometimes tiptoes up to say hi. ⁠

Stephanie would thrive in a quiet home with someone who understands that trust takes time and that love doesn’t always have to be loud.⁠

Our Story

City Dogs Rescue & City Kitties rescues adoptable dogs and cats in overcrowded and high-kill shelters, where resources are severely limited. We offer a lifeline to as many of these wonderful animals as possible. Sadly, many of the dogs and cats that we take in are just days — and sometimes hours — away from being euthanized for no reason other than lack of space. By finding these animals permanent and loving homes in the DC metropolitan area, we can enrich lives of humans and their pets. We welcome your help in any capacity, through volunteering, fostering, adopting, sponsoring and/or donating.

Six years ago, three people joined forces to bring one dog from Georgia, where he was just about to be euthanized, to DC, where he was adopted into a loving home within a week. More than 4,000 dogs (and now cats) later, City Dogs Rescue & City Kitties is known as the place to go when pet adoption is in view.

Here's why.

Working closely with high-kill shelters in rural communities with few resources, CDR&CK finds at-risk adoptable dogs and cats and saves their lives.
