$22,500 reward offered in animal cruelty case

There is a $22,500 reward offered for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person caught on film forcibly slamming a dog on the sidewalk before kicking and dragging the animal.

The Humane Rescue Alliance is investigating the incident, which was caught on several Ring doorbell cameras at around 6:30 a.m. on Monday, March 28 in Southeast D.C. near Pomeroy Rd. and Sheridan Rd.

In addition to a $20,000 reward from international bestselling author Don Winslow, a generous member of the public has stepped forward to partner with HRA on offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person responsible, bringing the total reward offered to $22,500.

Humane Law Enforcement officers at HRA are seeking the public’s help in identifying the suspect, as well as in obtaining additional surveillance footage.

HRA requests anyone with doorbell or surveillance cameras to review their footage from 6 – 8 a.m. on Monday, March 28 for potential sightings of the suspect, particularly from the following streets in the Southeast D.C. neighborhood: Pomeroy Rd., Sheridan Rd., Elvans Rd., Morris Rd., Stanton Rd., Maple View Pl., Mount View Pl., and Martin Luther King Jr. Pl. If you have information or footage, please call HRA at 202-723-5730.

“As a humane community we can have zero tolerance for despicable violence toward animals, and we intend to fight cruelty wherever it exists,” said Lisa LaFontaine, President and CEO of the Humane Rescue Alliance. “Our officers rely on your tips to rescue vulnerable animals and stop the cycle of cruelty and violence. We ask anyone who has information about this case to please come forward as soon as possible, and hope this reward helps. We won’t rest until the suspect is apprehended and the dog is safely in our care.”

A $22,500 reward is offered for information leading to the arrest of the person caught on film slamming a dog on the sidewalk before dragging the animal.

Biscuit is a senior pup who still has a lot of pep in his step! He loves to go on walks, jump around with other dogs, and wrestle with his toys. His foster let us know he is very quiet and easily entertains himself by playing with toys or burrowing into his favorite blanket for naps.

Biscuit is a cuddly guy who never turns down a belly rub and loves to give kisses. He is a little shy at first, but if you give him space, he will soon be your best friend and always be by your side.

Primo has been waiting so patiently for his new home and he knows it’s almost his turn!

This handsome senior is as sweet as they come. He’s just looking for a bed to crash on, a lap to lay his head on, and maybe a fellow canine friend if you have one. In return for a loving home, he promises to keep his snoring to a minimum and will always greet you at the door with a wagging tail and wet kisses.

Is there room in your home for Primo? Learn more about him at humanerescuealliance.org/adopt

Meet Kilo—this sweet pup is truly 1 in a 1,000! 💕

Kilo is a handsome 5-year-old boy with the most soulful brown eyes. This good boy enjoys car rides and going for fun, long walks with his favorite staff and volunteers. Did we mentioned he walks quite nicely on leash!

There isn't much Kilo enjoys more than attention and getting all the pets and love he can. He's also an all-star at playing tag, and you can't not laugh when you watch Kilo get the zoomies at play time.

Kilo was found as a stray but he's looking forward to a happy future with a family that will love him endlessly.

Darling Tata and her brother Marco are looking for a new place to hang their leashes.

Tata is one of those sweet dogs that likes to lean into pets and seeks out friends for love and attention. Marco is a happy-go-lucky guy and greets people with a waggy tail and a full bouncy body. And did we mention he really likes treats! You've never seen a happier pup than when he gets a tasty snack.

These two are the cutest pair of pups around and they will need to be adopted together, but you can take them both home for only one adoption fee!

Make a date to visit these two—we know you'll fall in love!

One of the most common reasons pets are surrendered to shelters is the lack of affordable pet wellness, training and education programs.

Due to cost and other barriers, pets in under-resourced communities often do not have access to basic veterinary care such as spay/neuter services, vaccinations and other medical and preventative care.

Thanks to a $2,000 WE CARE grant from the Safeway Foundation, HRA is continuing our critical work to help pet owners through the Help Out, Partner, and Engage (HOPE) program, which provides services to people and their pets like free pet vaccines, spay/neuter surgeries, microchips, pet food, and supplies.

Two Paralyzed Cats Are Looking for a Loving Home

Meet Quigley and Vanna, two lovable cats who are looking for homes to call their own.

They’re not your average cats, though. Quigley taught himself to walk again after a spinal injury paralyzed his hind legs. And Vanna, with her jumbo jet loud purr, is energetic, athletic and curious despite being paralyzed in her back legs.

Although they are both paralyzed and incontinent, it doesn’t stop them from being playful, and happy kitties. Their foster parents assure us caring for them is not much different from any other cat – and that it’s even easier than scooping a litter box.

Ready to spend your days in awe of Quigley or Vanna’s resiliency? Visit humanerescuealliance.org/adopt.

Say hello to Peach, who is as sweet as can be! This 2-year old is super friendly and affectionate, and adores cuddles and belly rubs. She's also super goofy and loves contorting herself into all sorts of shapes while snuggling up in your lap.

Although she's bursting with energy (and working hard not to express all that joy by pulling on the leash during her walk), she is also happy to lounge quietly by your side.

Peach is also a very fast learner and she already knows how to "sit" and "stay." Is this smart girl the one for you? Meet, adopt, and go home with your sweet Peach!

Things haven't always been so easy for Xanthus. She came to HRA pregnant and scared in the midst of winter. After just a few short weeks in her foster home, Xanthus blossomed into an inquisitive cat who will never say no to some treats and loves a game with her favorite feather wand. She has been a patient and devoted mother to six kittens, and now it's her turn to find a family who will continue to build up her confidence in new situations.

Is there room in your home for Xanthus? Learn more at humanerescuealliance.org/adopt.

Many thanks to Lila and Luisa of Cadette Troop 1165 who took their love of rescue animals to the next level! After several weeks of collecting donations from generous donors, the girls made adoption packages filled with supplies for dogs and bunnies. Each package had blankets, toys, and biscuits along with a hand-written note congratulating the adopters on their new companion.

Dog rescued from a fire is reunited with DC's Bravest

Yesterday we were invited to a 3rd birthday celebration for Charlie, a lab-hound mix who was rescued from a massive house fire last October.

At the celebration, Charlie received a special surprise: she got to reunite with the DC Fire And EMS firefighters, HRA officers and Friendship Hospital for Animals veterinarians who saved her life. As a celebration of her life, her parents expressed their thanks in person to all those who took part in Charlie’s chain of survival.

“I’ve long believed teamwork expands our ability to protect animals and keep families together, and our partnerships with DC Fire and EMS and Friendship Hospital for Animals are perfect examples of that,” said Lisa LaFontaine, President and CEO of the Humane Rescue Alliance. “I’m grateful to be a part of a humane community, where linking arms with partners ensures people and animals in need aren’t left behind. Without such compassionate and dedicated partners, our lifesaving work wouldn’t be possible.”

We adopted Princess Buttercup (formerly Fern) in May and she has settled in nicely as a member of our family. She always finds something to play with or to eat as you can see from this selection of pictures. We were so luck this that she came to us crate trained and housebroken with a couple of commands already under her belt. I’m so curious about this one’s story. Her beagle half is strong, she follows her nose everywhere and she escaped 4 times the first week we had her. Fortunately she runs up to the first person she sees to say hello. Thank you HRA for helping bring this joy into our family!
This is not a good place to surrender your pet.
I had an unacceptable and inexcusable experience on 7-29-21 surrendering two of my cats to this facility. My cats were nervous due to never have experienced riding in a car so they p**ped in the cage they were brought in. I brought my cats there because I was assured that they do not kill animals unless they are a danger to society. Within 5 minutes of my arrival the technician Corey claimed my cats were feral and that they would possibly be euthanized. They brought my cats into a room full of barking dogs to make this conclusion. As I made my arguement that that my cats were not feral the technicians were all unprofessional and misinformed about the differences of feline intake. I realized that I gave my cats to the wrong people. An hour passed as I was in complete disbelief, I had to ask for my carrier back so that I could leave. It took 20 minutes to get the carrier returned to me. When the technician Corey brought it back it was still dirty from p**p all over it. My reply was " Wow this took so long, I thought you may have cleaned it." Corey arrogantly replied "no I had to get your cat out of it". So they left my cat in f***s for an hour. Beware of this place! I am not done with them by a long shot! The staff is full of uneducated people of color. I am a black woman who used to be employed by DC Animal Control New York Ave DC. This is a disgrace and inhumane.
Hi everyone! I found this sweet boy as I was pulling up to my house. He had no tags and I'm not sure if he's microchipped. His ears are a bit cropped and he doesn't have a long tail. Found him on Lebanon st and riggs rd

Dear HRA: Your "virtual" adoption process is so slow and tedious and impractical for normal people leading normal lives on tight skeds during a pandemic .. it hurts your animals. It is so cumbersome I feel it dissuades adoption. And WHY are you doing this? I can walk through Gaithersburg, Prince George, just about ANY animal shelter or event and look at pets real-time and take them home same day. IF PEOPLE CAN PRODUCE A VACCINATION CARD, THEY SHOULD BE ALLOWED IN TO THE SHELTERS. ______ And HOW can one interact with and sense a pet's response, when the animal does not understand the concept of video? They cannot sense a warm, loving person at the other end of the camera and respond accordingly. And it is crazy to make them wait in the cruelty of your shelter and cages, or in some home that will kick them out... WEEKS... whilst the prospective parents get discouraged and move on. I wanted another friend / sibling for my cat NOW. He is lonesome and craving other animal companionship NOW. Not in a month or two weeks. And when I drove up to your shelter yesterday I was told, despite a vaccination card, I would have to go online.. so I went online and waited TWO HOURS ... and NOTHING. I am urgently putting my earnings back in order and attending to other parts of life and church and so on - and then parents with younger children have soccor and etc all weekends or evenings ... we cannot sit online and wait for you all day long. But YOU TAKE AWAY THE INTERACTION BETWEEN PROSPECTIVE PET AND HUMAN. VIRTUAL IS FOR YOU, NOT FOR US OR FOR YOUR ANIMALS. YOU SLOW OR PREVENT THEIR ADOPTION. FOR ONE CAT -- AND MOST OF YOUR ANIMALS, LET'S FACE IT, ARE WONDERFUL, BUT HARD-TO-ADOPT, either older or with infirmity, so this is HUGE to them, to be forced to WAIT, and you are a 'kill' shelter, are you not?? -- I WAS TOLD 3 OTHERS WERE IN FRONT OF ME AND I WOULD HAVE TO WAIT BEHIND THEM. But that's not how humans 'shop' for anything. We will move on, because our child or our other animal child wants an adoption NOW, or this is the timing based on other things, to adopt NOW ... and that poor animal will suffer and/or die, because you made the process so difficult. They do not 'see' us. SO 'VIRTUAL MEET AND GREET' IS STUPID. IS NOT BASED ON ANIMAL PSYCHOLOGY. HOLD AN EVENT AND BRING THEM ALL THERE, FOR EX... WE CAN ALL GO INTO MALLS NOW WITHOUT MASKS, SO WHY CAN WE NOT GO INTO AN EVENT WITHOUT MASKS? #hra #animaladoption

Good morning, just thought of sharing this here in hopes to find anew home and/or financial support for Melanie.
Hello. Your website says you are offering vaccines by appointment only but your phone message and the email response I got say that you are not. Can you please clarify?
We adopted our Oreo the tripod from you on August 21, 2015. He was fostered by Echo Kief through Lost Dog by way of HRA. People thought we had lost our minds adopting him as he was terrified of everything. Now he is the happiest dog!! Best decision ever. He tolerates his sibling who was rescued as well.
