Fostering is one of the most impactful ways you can help a shelter pet in need. 💖

When you open your home to a dog like Lima Bean (a dog struggling so much in the shelter environment) you’re giving them a chance to decompress, feel safe, and show the world who they really are. Fostering gives animals a break from the shelter and helps us learn more about what makes them shine.🌟

HRA provides the supplies — you provide the love.

📣 DC community, we need your attention on this one! This isn’t just about a contest, it’s about equity, resources, and what it means to truly show up for one another.

Meet Darren Thompson: Navy veteran, teaching artist, community advocate, and founder of the East River Dog Park Group. Darren is a finalist in the Wahl® Man of the Year Year “Benevolent Beard” Contest.

If he wins, $20,000 will go straight to the new Texas Avenue Dog Park — the very first public dog park in Ward 7.

This project is more than a park. Ward 7 and 8 are pet care deserts, with no vets, groomers, trainers, or pet supply stores. Families here love their pets just as much as anywhere else, but face barriers every day. HRA is working to change that with mobile vet and behavior clinics, expanded foster support, in-home veterinary care, and our new East of the River Pet Resource Center. Darren’s mission is perfectly aligned — building community through pets where resources are needed most.

Since founding the East River Dog Park Group, Darren has:
* Partnered with The Mission Continues to install little free libraries and pet pantries
* Hosted outdoor movie nights and school support programs for kids and teachers
* Brought pollinator gardens to local schools
* Worked with HRA to provide pet supplies to families in need

Just last weekend, Darren and The Mission Continues transformed HRA’s small dog yard into a sensory garden for our pups! 😍

We are endlessly grateful for Darren and the neighbors who believe, as he says, that dogs can help build community. Now it’s our turn to show up for him.

🗳️ Voting is open until Thursday, Sept. 12 at 6 PM ET.

YOUR vote can help bring $20,000 to Ward 7’s first-ever dog park.

Let’s help this beard do even more good!

Lima Bean is breaking our hearts…💔

In the office, he’s the sweetest cuddlebug, goofy lap-dog wannabe, and the chillest WFH sidekick.
But in the kennel, it’s a different story. He’s stressed, anxious, and struggling more every single day.

He needs out of the shelter ASAP — even a short-term foster could change everything.

What we know about Lima Bean:
- Potty trained and an excellent house guest.
- Total love bug when it’s just him and his people.
- Can get stressed around other dogs, so he’ll thrive as the only pet in a calm home.
- On walks, he may cry or pull if he sees other dogs, so he’ll do best with someone comfortable handling that.
- When he feels safe? He’s PURE SWEETNESS, all snuggles and kisses. 😘

We’ll provide all the supplies and support — you just give him the couch, the quiet, and the love he’s craving.

Meet Princess Muttercup – Toy Royalty in Residence 👑🐾

Princess Muttercup has finally found The One—the perfect toy, her crown jewel, the bone treasure of her dreams. She carries it everywhere like the prized possession it is.

But now she faces the ultimate royal dilemma: when someone offers a tasty treat, does she dare drop her perfect toy? Or does she attempt the impossible—take both?

Spoiler alert: Princess Muttercup is a “have your cake and eat it too” kind of gal. She’s been spotted trying to juggle her beloved toy and a snack, proving that true queens never have to choose between their favorite things.

If you’re ready to serve a lifetime of love, laughter, treats, and squeaky toys, Princess Muttercup is ready to reign over your heart. 💙

👑 Meet Pearla — a hidden gem of HRA!

Rescued from an abandoned apartment, this 3-year-old sweetheart hasn’t let her past dim her spirit. With those giant, expressive ears (& the best sound antennas you’ve ever seen) and her goofy love for fetch, Pearla is ready to start her next chapter… with you?? 🏡

She might need a treat or two to warm up, but once you’ve shared a little patience (((and maybe some cheese 🧀))), you’ll have a loyal friend for life. Pearla is so playful and sweet… and eager to learn more tricks with her future family!

Come meet Pearla today at Humane Rescue Alliance at 71 Oglethorpe St NW Washington, DC between 12–7 PM. Your new best friend might just be waiting for you!

🌟 Senior Sunday Spotlight: Benny Boo + Sandy Lou 🌟

This sweet mother–daughter duo lost the only home they’ve ever known when their beloved person passed away. Thanks to our transfer partner support program, they made their way to HRA in search of a new family to love.

🐶 Benny Boo: 10 years old, a gentle and soulful senior with that classic Dachshund snout and a heart full of love
🐶 Sandy Lou: 6 years old, sporting an adorable wire-haired coat and a playful sparkle in her eyes

These two are inseparable! Benny Boo is Sandy Lou’s mom, and the bond they share is unshakable. Together, they’ll bring double the love (and just one adoption fee!).

They’ve already been through so much, and now they’re simply waiting for someone to open their home and hearts to them. Could that be you?

Meet Benny Boo + Sandy Lou at 71 Oglethorpe St NW between 12–7 PM any day!

🥹 Today was one for the books ✨ Veteran volunteers from — a nationwide network dedicated to continuing service beyond the uniform — spent their day giving our small dog yard a long awaited glow-up.

What started as an underused space is now on its way to becoming a vibrant spot our pups will love for years to come.

We’ll be sharing the incredible transformation next week and trust us… you won’t want to miss it 👀 but we couldn’t wait to share a glimpse of the amazing team who made it happen! We’re still buzzing with excitement and gratitude and all the feels 🐾 Stay tuned!

Thank you to these amazing service platoons for all that you have done for us and our rescue animals. 💙
