Ever wondered why rescue dogs seem to change after a few months? 🐾

It’s often around the 80 to 90 day mark that they start to show their true colors.

When we first bring them home, they comply and seem grateful. But without boundaries or rules, they might take advantage of our kindness.

Many people I talk to say they’ve had their rescue dog for about three months, and that’s when the challenges often begin.

So, here’s my advice: start training your dog 24 hours after they arrive.

This doesn’t mean being harsh, but it’s about establishing rules early on. It’s much easier to set boundaries now than to change behaviors later when they think anything goes.

We've had dogs that seemed a bit on the spectrum, and others that picked up commands in just a few days.

Take our experience with an American bulldog who struggled due to oxygen deprivation at birth. We had to repeat the same lessons over and over, only to see him forget everything the next day. It was tough, and honestly, we felt like we failed him.

🐾 Understanding rewards is crucial for training your dog!

A reward is a consequence that increases the likelihood of a behavior happening again. But not all rewards are created equal!

Food is convenient and easy to carry, but it might not always be the best choice for your dog in every situation.

Here are some tips to find the right reward for your furry friend:

- Observe what excites your dog: Is it food, toys, or playtime?
- Experiment with different treats: Some dogs go crazy for cheese, while others might prefer steak or even a frisbee!
- Keep it fresh: If your dog gets the same reward every time, they might lose interest. Mix it up to keep them engaged!

Remember, the key is to understand your dog's preferences and keep their training fun and rewarding.
