Puppies learn through **consistency and repetition**.

As owners and trainers, we can’t expect our puppies to be consistent if we aren’t consistent ourselves.

If the rules change from day to day, it becomes more difficult for them to understand what we expect. Additionally, you may also observe the following behaviors from a puppy that is receiving inconsistent signals: confusion, frustrated, aggression, anxiety.........

Same commands. Same rules. Same follow-through.

The more consistent **we** become, the easier it is for our puppies to become consistent too.

**Consistency starts at our end of the leash. 🐾**

Change your habits, you'll change your dog's habits. There's so much talk in the dog training world about "modifying dog habits," but in my experience, one of the biggest reasons many dog owners aren't able to maintain a well-trained dog is because they (the owner) revert to "their"old habits.

So, instead of focusing on your dog's compliance, let's be aware of how many times we are 1. Rewarding the correct behavior and/or responses, 2. Consistent in guiding or correcting or clarifying dog's choices, disobedience and understanding, respectively. 3. Are we totally dedicated to our dog on walks or are we engaged in texting/surfing the net.

Don't look at training as 15 minute sessions, view it as a way of life - you're always in training mode. When you make that shift - you'll feel what it's like to have a well-trained dog!!!

If you do enough of on leash training, there's a high probability that off-leash training just kind c of happens naturally.

What I've found throughout my many years of is that pet owners & some trainers view on and off-leash training as two distinct venues. In my experience, this is NOT true at all.

On leash training is a step towards off-leash training; it is part of of leash training. For me, the MOST important part.

I believe results for many dog owners would become much more RELIABLE and faster if taken the philosophy that every time you use that leash or long line or whatever acceptable training equipment that gives you the ability to control the environment, control your dog and build proper training repetitions to forge good habits.

When we separate on and off-leash training in our philosophy we fail to spend more time on the FOUNDATION to having a reliable off-leash trained dog. What is the FOUNDATION of off-leash training?

ON-LEASH TRAINING!!!

A command practiced only in the same environment will probably yield you stellar results there.

It will most likely give you a false sense of security followed by embarrassment & frustration when using that command in a different environment.

Your tip for today is practice in different areas, different levels of distractions & yes, places where you are not 100% confident; your dog feeds off of your confidence.

If your assertive there is a very high chance that spills over to your dog when they are scared, confused or disobedient.

For me, there's just something really special about a small dog that heels (walks by your side nicely).

I mean, to me, it just looks cool!

Most of the time, unfortunately, we train commands in the sane manner; environment, present the same picture, dressed with treat bag or dog training apparel, have treats or toys readily available for reward, etc.......

Structure and consistency has it place in but sometimes it can become less effective when we really need it.

For example: if we are committed to training our dog on a daily basis but (as we should in many training phases) if we only train in a sterile environment and show the puppy or dog the same visual and actions when they are outside and they're engaged w a distraction and you command SIT when they turn to you from a different angle, don't see the treat bag, notice that your tone is different, it becomes like a different command to them.

Begin training in a sterile environment and then progress to less and less sterile. It is easier said than done! Knowing when to move to the next phase is VERY IMPORTANT! To quick, false sense of security and holes in the foundation. Too long, some confusion w the dog's understanding of generalizations and pet owners becoming frustrated.
