We provide spay/neuter and humane education, animal control services, and cruelty and neglect investigation services to ensure that companion animals have home with responsible, committed and loving caregivers.

During a recent Pawsitive Adventures outing, The Kids' Place - Walla Walla daycare donated supplies that they collected for the animals at Blue Mountain Humane Society. Our adoptable dog Makila was there to help with the delivery and to thank the kids in person. She was gentle and affectionate, soaking up their attention and leaving lots of tail wags in return.

Makila also enjoyed a walk through Whitman College with BMHS volunteers Machelle Colligan and Bonnie Terrio. She splashed in the creek, stepped in every puddle she could find, and greeted staff with her usual calm and polite demeanor. She waited patiently outside buildings and ended her day with a pup cup from The Whitman Commons.

Buster also joined Machelle and Bonnie for a campus outing. He was all smiles as he explored the creek, watched ducks, greeted students, and cruised to Dutch Bros East for a well-earned pup cup. Buster’s love for car rides, water, and affection made the whole experience a joy.

Thank you to our volunteers and to the generous kids and staff at The Kids Place. If you’re interested in adopting or supporting Pawsitive Adventures, visit www.bluemountainhumane.org

We want to take a moment to recognize an act of generosity that touched all of us at Blue Mountain Humane Society.

As Southgate Center Market prepares to close its doors, store owner Randi Kelly made a generous donation of surplus food and pet supplies to BMHS. These items will go directly toward helping animals in our care and supporting local families who rely on our pet food pantry.

We are especially grateful to Randi for thinking of us during such a difficult transition. Her kindness speaks volumes about her commitment to this community, and her gift will have a lasting impact.

We would also like to thank Yvonne Huff, a former BMHS volunteer, for collecting and delivering the donation. Her thoughtfulness helped ensure these items reached the animals who need them most.

We are saddened to see Southgate Center Market close after serving our community for years. Our heartfelt thanks go to Randi and her family for their generosity and for everything they have contributed to Walla Walla.

Blue Mountain Humane Society has once again been certified as a No-Kill Shelter by Best Friends Animal Society.

In 2024, we achieved a 97% live release rate, meaning nearly every animal who came through our doors found their way back home, into a new home, or into a rescue or foster program.

At BMHS, no-kill isn’t a gimmick or a marketing phrase. It means we never euthanize for space or length of stay. We only make that call when an animal is suffering or poses a serious safety risk, and only after exhausting other options.

This milestone isn’t about numbers. It’s about community. It’s about the people who adopt, foster, volunteer, donate, and share our belief that every animal deserves a chance.

Thank you for helping us keep that promise.

Blue Mountain Humane Society will be closed until 2 p.m. today, Friday, for our quarterly all-staff meeting.

Congratulations to the Tipton-Harman Pack!

Today, we were thrilled to have BMHS Board President Alzada Tipton, her husband Greg Harman, and their beloved BMHS alum Moses at the shelter for a very special adoption.

They came to adopt Lumberjack (pictured at left), a 160-pound gentle giant who had been waiting patiently for his second chance. Now renamed Uluru, he’s officially home and joins his new brothers Moses and Jethro (also a BMHS alum) to form one incredible trio that (altogether) tips the scales at over 350 pounds of canine companionship.

Uluru came to us as a stray, quiet, kind, and full of love to give. Watching him head home with this family, who gives so much to BMHS and our community, reminds us why this work matters.

Thank you, Alzada, for your continued leadership and compassion. And welcome home, Uluru. You’re in the best possible hands.
