🌿 Summer Planting & Pet Safety 🌿

Summer is the perfect time to enjoy colorful blooms, beautiful landscaping, and more time outdoors with your pets. As you add to your garden and flower beds, it’s important to remember that not all plants are safe for dogs and cats.

Many popular flowers and shrubs can cause anything from mild stomach upset to serious health concerns if ingested. Fortunately, there are many beautiful, pet-friendly options that can help you create a yard that is both stunning and safe for your four-legged family members.

Take a moment to review our pet-safe planting guide to learn about common plants that are safe for pets, as well as several that should be avoided.

If you ever have concerns that your pet has chewed on or ingested a potentially toxic plant, please contact your veterinarian as soon as possible. Prompt treatment can make a significant difference in your pet’s outcome.

Summer Pet Safety Tips

As summer arrives in Vernal, warmer temperatures mean it’s time to take a few extra precautions to keep your pets safe and healthy.

Here are a few important summer safety reminders:

• Always provide access to fresh, clean water.
• Make sure pets have plenty of shade when spending time outdoors.
• Avoid walks and strenuous exercise during the hottest parts of the day.
• Be mindful that hot pavement can quickly burn paw pads.
• Never leave a pet unattended in a parked vehicle, even for a few minutes.
• Keep pets current on flea, tick, and heartworm prevention.

Know the Signs of Heat Stroke

Heat stroke can become life-threatening very quickly. Watch for:

• Excessive panting or difficulty breathing
• Excessive drooling
• Bright red or pale gums
• Weakness or lethargy
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Disorientation or stumbling
• Collapse or seizures

When Should You Contact Your Veterinarian?

If your pet is showing any signs of overheating, move them to a cool area immediately, offer cool (not ice-cold) water, and contact your veterinarian right away. Heat stroke is a medical emergency, and prompt treatment can make a significant difference in your pet’s recovery.

This fluffy patient is polydactyl, meaning he has extra toes due to a harmless genetic trait. It’s more common in Maine C**ns and gives them those iconic oversized paws!

🐾 Patient of the week!🐾

Current clinic status: kinda busy… and we love every second of it!

This Maine C**n came in this week for entropion surgery to help correct eyelids that were rolling inward and irritating his eyes. The procedure helps relieve discomfort and prevent future damage to the eye.

While he was here, we also removed a small wart behind his ear for cosmetic purposes. Thankfully, it was non-cancerous 🐾

We love being able to share these behind-the-scenes moments and give pets the comfort they deserve!

By age 3, most dogs and cats have some form of dental disease. It often starts small but can quickly progress if left untreated.

The Stages of Dental Disease:
🔹 Stage 1: Gingivitis – Red, inflamed gums and plaque buildup
🔹 Stage 2: Advanced Gingivitis – Tartar accumulation and bad breath
🔹 Stage 3: Periodontitis – Infection begins damaging bone and tissues
🔹 Stage 4: Advanced Periodontitis – Severe pain, tooth loss, and systemic risk

Spay & Neuter Your Pet: One of the Most Important Decisions You’ll Make for Their Health

Did you know spaying or neutering your pet can significantly reduce the risk of serious health problems and help them live a longer, healthier life?

✨ Why it matters:
✔ Lowers risk of certain cancers (mammary, uterine, testicular)
✔ Prevents life-threatening infections like pyometra
