🎃 🎄 🍫 Halloween or Christmas: which chocolate sends more dogs to the vet? Christmas, by a wide margin.

Researchers checked health records from 229 UK vet practices. They compared chocolate cases around four holidays with the rest of the year.

What that means:
• Christmas was the clear danger zone. The odds of a chocolate visit were 4.74 times higher.
• Easter roughly doubled the odds (1.97).
• Halloween came in at 1.55, but that bump could be chance.
• The dose decides. Ounce for ounce, baking chocolate has nearly 7 times the stimulant of milk chocolate.
• Signs usually show up 6 to 12 hours later.

A calm dog now ≠ a cleared dog.

Tonight is Día de Mu***os de las Mascotas. 🕯️

In Mexico, October 27 has become the night the pets come home first, days before the human souls arrive on November 1 and 2.
The date is a newer tradition.
The bond it honors is ancient.

To the Aztecs, a dog guided its person through Mictlán, the land of the dead.
The Xoloitzcuintli carries the name of Xolotl, the dog-headed god who walked with the dead.
At the first river, the story goes, a dog who recognized its person carried them across on its back.

Two thousand years ago in West Mexico, clay dogs like these were buried beside the people who loved them.

Every dog walks beside us for a while, as we greatly grieve them.
Some walk us all the way home.

Setting an ofrenda tonight? 🕯️ 🐾🦴 🧡
Add a photo, fresh water, their favorite treat, cempasúchil (marigolds), their best toy or tug, with a candle to light their way.

Please, keep the flame and the treats out of reach of the dogs and pets still with you.

🤔 Diet or probiotics: which does the evidence put first?

A January 2026 ACVIM-endorsed consensus statement suggests avoiding the term IBD.

Its term is chronic inflammatory enteropathy (CIE): “persistent or recurrent GI signs and variable mucosal inflammation.”

What that means:
“Dietary treatment trials are the preferred first-choice diagnostic recommendation.”

The diet is fed “exclusively for at least 2 weeks,” and “at least 3 trials with different diets should be considered, if possible.”

“38–89% of dogs with CIE are food-responsive.”
“Empirical antimicrobial treatment is not recommended.”

Response to tylosin “is usually short-lived.”

Pre-, pro-, or synbiotics “do not significantly affect the clinical response alone” in most studies, but “can be beneficial if given concurrently with diet.”

Bottom line: diet first, if clinically stable.
Work it out with your veterinarian.
