It’s official, our 2025 plaque from Best Friends Animal Society has arrived!

Why is our team excited about this continued accomplishment?!
It means we have maintained a 90% or better save rate for the entire year.
And we are currently carrying a 95%+ for 2026 as well!

BARC has always been a no kill program, once an animal is with us, it’s safe.
But what this represents is the transition of animal control with us as well!
We work hand in hand with the city animal control officers now.

And before all the naysayers start, here are some facts.
🐾City of Uvalde animal control intakes have not changed policy wise.
🐾 The number of intakes is sadly the same as well, AC brings in approx 700 animals every single year. We had over 100 cats in one month in 2026 already.
🐾Our adoption & rescue guidelines have also remained intact, we follow our same procedures as we have for years.

We may not all agree on policies, current lines of thinking, what programs to offer….
But at the end of the day, this recognizes our every day grind & hard work.

If you look back in the not so distant past, it was a very different story for animals entering our city AC.
Lots of progress & partnerships have occurred to make this a reality and we continue to strive every day to continue our growth on a positive track.

We have a lot of continued work ahead of us.
More change is needed for animal welfare in South Texas, no one is denying that.
But today we take a moment to smile and be proud!

When flood waters caused devastation in Uvalde, our amazing friends at Austin Pets Alive! came running.

They arrived not only with physical manpower, donations, and supplies; they also started to evacuate animals onsite at our shelter.

Elsa was one of the lucky ones!
This is an update we received from her APA foster mom.
We couldn’t be happier to see Elsa frocking and playing with her new friends. ❤️
