For our final Sunday Senior Spotlight, we'll be discussing our herd of Alpacas, which consists of three spunky males that we love dearly.

Kachay, Oso, and Paqo were each born in 2008 (on different days) and are approaching their 18th birthdays! All three arrived together in 2010, so we've had the privilege of their presence in our Backyards & Barnyards for 15 years now.

Throughout their time here, they've moved yards a few times but have recently settled into their own next to the Jacob sheep. One thing the three of them all love is a water sprinkler! They enjoy standing over it to cool off, and then rolling around in the dirt afterwards!

Their keepers say Paqo is the leader despite being the smallest, while Kachay is a 'food hound' and is always the first to eat the feed pellets out of your hand!

All three Alpacas get sheared once a year! You can see in the photos the contrast in the thickness of their coats throughout the seasons. They get sheared in early spring depending on the weather and can enjoy a light coat for the warmer months while it grows out to be thick and cozy for the winter.

Sometimes, you'll see Paqo with a fly mask on, which works to prevent him from rubbing his itchy eyes. He has been dealing with some seasonal allergies recently that just require a little extra tlc and medications to keep him comfortable.

Our veterinary team is always mindful that any animal can experience muscle loss in their senior years, which is why our alpacas are on additional supplements to assist with this.

Visit these three and feed them by hand any day from 10:00am to 4:30pm.

It's the 10th annual WORLD OTTER DAY! 🌊
Let's learn a thing👇

North American river otters are fantastic swimmers because of their webbed feet, short legs, and strong tail. This animal also has 6-8 minutes of lung capacity for diving underwater, while their ears and nostrils can completely close while underwater as well. Otters swim up to 5.6 mph and can even run up to 29 mph!!

Our North American river otters, Lily and Briar, are always very playful and easily show off their impressive abilities on exhibit. They also frequently enjoy enrichment!

Enrichment is a valuable tool we use every day at Utica Zoo for all of our animals. Our otters are always enthused about their food enrichment!

The PVC piping you see here is a puzzle feeder for our otters, making it more difficult for them to get to their fish while encouraging mental stimulation and physical activity. The top even rotates! This contraption was constructed by and generously donated to us from a local BOCES group.

You can contribute to our animals' enrichment devices any time by searching through our enrichment wish list at uticazoo.org/wishlist

Did you know? Zebus are a type of cattle that have a hump like camel, which serves as a reservoir of fat that can be used as a source of energy when regular food is not available...but don't worry, our two guys are always spoiled with daily feedings of hay and grain.

You can see our two zebus and our miniature Highland cow in their yard any day from 10:00am to 4:30pm.

Thank you to our generous partner First Source Federal Credit Union for sponsoring this educational content.

Our next Sunday Senior Spotlight will be highlighting our iconic White-handed Gibbon duo...Snowflake and Yoda! 💡

Snowflake was born in 1988 and is currently 38 years old. She was one of the oldest of her species to give birth when she was almost 38 this last December! She has been at Utica Zoo since 1994.

Yoda was born in 1984 and will be turning 42 on June 14th. He arrived at Utica Zoo in 1995, and the two have been together ever since.

Their animal care team describes the relationship between these two as very strong. Their bond remains rooted in trust, which you can see presented in their natural behaviors, like grooming one another and each singing their parts in the family song they share. These elaborate vocal routines signal their territory and strengthen the family bond.

As parents, Snowflake nourishes and carries their baby for several months while Yoda constantly surveys their surroundings to ensure they are protected. More recently, Yoda has been busy entertaining and playing with Dooku, providing more space for Snowflake to teach Artoo how to climb. They are incredible parents who take their roles very seriously.

Did you know? Dooku and Artoo actually have an older sister named Malay who currently lives in Tennessee.

Because of their increased age, our animal care team is always monitoring Snowflake and Yoda's mobility, since arthritis in the wrists is very common for this species, due to how often they swing from branch to branch!

You can see this family of four any day (above 50 degrees) from 10:00am to 4:30pm. 🌞
