The Utica Zoo creates unique experiences and promotes public appreciation of wildlife through education, conservation, and recreation. Located in the Roscoe Conkling Park, the Utica Zoo was established in 1914 as part of a recreational complex made possible by the donation of land from Thomas R. Proctor. The Zoo had grown from its beginnings of three Fallow Deer donated by the New York Zoological Society to its present collection of species of animals from around the world. NEXT weekend is our Pumpkin SMASH animal enrichment days on both Saturday, November 7th and Sunday, November 8th from 10:00am to 3:00pm.

It's spooky season...and these houses would certainly spook us! 👻

Most of the animals you see here are endangered, vulnerable, or threated in some way. And most of the reasons why are because of OUR ACTIVITIES as humans.

Today, see how you can lessen your carbon footprint, support sustainable palm oil, recycle properly, and support conservation organizations.

At the very least, turn the water off when you're brushing your teeth, okay? Starting small is still a start 🌎

And as always, we recommend you support AZA-accredited institutions like ours, because that means they've been reviewed to meet the highest standards of animal wellbeing and actively contribute to animal conservation efforts. It's National Cat Day...but why is there a photo of a robin here?

Well, according to the National Bird Conservancy, in the U.S. alone, an estimated 100 million owned and stray or feral cats are roaming outside, and because of their hunting instincts, these cats kill an estimated 2.4 billion birds each year!

Stray or feral cats are actually considered an invasive species because of their rapid reproduction and destruction of bird populations.

Songbirds are excellent seed dispersers, pollinators, and insect controllers, and when they are predated at this extreme, their ecosystems feel it too.

You can help prevent the creation of more stray or feral cats by neutering or spaying your own, or keeping them inside.

Dance and twirl the night away at Utica Zoo's Cubs Cotillion on Saturday, November 14th from 4:00pm to 7:00pm! 💜✨

This is sure to be a magical evening of music, memories, and making a difference for the Utica Zoo! This special parent‑and‑child dance invites families to dress up, dance together, and support an incredible cause.

Here's a treat for you on 🍊

This is Artoo, our 10-month-old White-handed Gibbon who was born to Snowflake and Yoda in December of 2025. Him, his parents, and his 3-year-old brother Dooku swing, sing, and play all day in our Forever Forests. The Gibbon species are commonly known for their loud calls and 'forest songs'.

Did you know that there are roughly 20 different species of Gibbons? Of these, 5 species are classified as Critically Endangered, 14 as Endangered, and 1 as Vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

This Halloween, we encourage you to do your research and support candies that participate in the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). The expansion of palm oil plantations directly impact the ecosystems that many apes rely on for survival.

Also, a fun distinction you can share with your friends; Gibbons are not monkeys...they are lesser apes! They do not fall under the umbrella of monkeys because they do not have tails, but they DO have opposable thumbs, whereas monkeys do not have that extra finger to work with.

Our monkeys at the Utica Zoo include the Mexican-spider monkey and the Golden-lion Tamarin.

Our waters bring us together. Our national marine sanctuaries tell our stories. Celebrate these stories with us today on !

It takes people power to make a national marine sanctuary, and it takes people power to sustain it.

You can support marine sanctuaries with a cleanup to remove trash from your local beach or waterways, or sharing this information with friends and family to spread awareness. When we work together, we can protect these vital habitats and preserve future generations.

We have a red panda brother on the move you should know about! 👇

Bao and Momo were born on June 29th, 2025 at Utica Zoo and we have had the pleasure of watching them grow and play together for over a year now! These two certainly have a special place in our hearts, and we know you feel the same. ❤️

As you may already know, the red panda species is Endangered. The Utica Zoo has been actively working with the SSP (Species Survival Plan) to help support red panda populations, and the time has come for both Bao and Momo to try and breed.

Momo will be venturing to his new home at an accredited facility early next week. We encourage you to stop by and wish him well before the weekend is over (October 24th and 25th). Once there, he will be meeting a new friend with the hope of starting his own family!

Bao will be patiently waiting for his gal pal to arrive to Utica Zoo! Don't worry, we'll keep you updated about all of that when the time comes.

A new red panda habitat is still in our strategic plan! Our hope is to build an entirely new facility in our Asian Realm, that will allow for premium indoor and outdoor viewing. Generous donations like that from the Peter Corigliano IV Memorial Fund help us reach our goal and bring you closer to our red pandas. They hope their contribution inspires others.

Ashley Corigliano, Peter's mother, says: "Peter’s life was filled with a love for animals, a sense of wonder about the world, and a special place in his heart for the Utica Zoo—especially the red pandas. Through the Peter Corigliano IV Memorial Fund, we are honored to donate $20,000 to support the zoo’s planned renovations and its vision for a future red panda exhibit.

We hope this contribution will help move these plans forward and create a beautiful, lasting space where families can connect with wildlife, children can learn, and Peter’s love for animals can continue to inspire others.

Our hope is that Peter’s legacy will live on through this project, bringing joy, education, and meaningful experiences to generations of children and families who visit the zoo."
