Feeling the aura that comes with Fat Cat Friday? 👀

Meet Aura herself! A beautiful Calico girl weighing in at almost 20 pounds - and we could not love her more. Aura ended up with us due to the unfortunate circumstance of her previous owner(s) moving and being unable to bring her along. At 10 years old, we can only imagine the confusion she’s feeling right now.

Aura is a very vocal kitty and, while she can seem independent, she is very friendly and enjoys attention when she initiates it. We even found a pearl collar fit for this sassy, slightly chunky, adorable Queen - and she wears it proudly.

One thing that is definitely on Aura’s terms? Other cats. And by that, we mean she would ban them if she could. Which unfortunately means she gets less space at the shelter than other cat-friendly cats - another reason to bust her out! Respecting her wishes, Aura will need a home without other cats. Don’t even try it she says 😂 We don’t have any known history of Aura living with dogs or young children, but we’re happy to go over her behavior and answer any questions with you!

Aura is spayed, current on vaccines, and microchipped. To view all of our available animals and inquire about a possible adoption or foster, please call (315) 738-4357, stop-in, or visit our website: www.anitas-sshs.org/adopt 🐾

German Shepherd lovers…we really need your help.

Meet Willow - currently, she is the animal in the shelter most affected by stress. Since arriving earlier this month, Willow’s quality of life has been rapidly declining 😔 The stress and isolation have become overwhelming for her, causing her to lose 5 pounds since arrival. Today, once back in her kennel, her anxiety even worsened, leading to severe gnawing at her nails.

Willow came to us as part of an effort to help another rescue whose fate isn’t as easily determined as ours. For us, it’s simple: save, shelter, and love until we find them a FURever home, no matter how long it takes. For animals like Willow, the greatest comfort comes from that one big step - finding a loving home.

While Willow is scared, we have noticed positives. Once she’s settled, she enjoys enrichment toys and tennis balls. Outside, she loves running in the yard but still needs reassurance that loud noises are okay 🙂 She even went on a doggie day out, where she walked well on the leash and slowly but surely enjoyed meeting new people. She’s shy at first, but we are open to all kinds of meet-and-greets!

While our animals receive daily enrichment and multiple outdoor visits, it doesn’t compare to the love and stability of a real home. Please help us make that a reality for Willow. Willow is 3 years old, spayed, current on vaccines, and microchipped.

This poor boy just wants to know what it feels like to be wanted.

Marcus came to us as a stray from New Hartford at the beginning of the summer. Not long after, we learned that before the police found him, he was most likely set loose by his previous owner. Thinking back to when he first arrived and comparing it to this very day, we still don’t understand how anyone could want to “get rid of” the loving companionship Marcus offers 🥲

As we do with all of our animals, we got him settled in - fed, warm, and showered with the love and care we’re always eager to give, so they know they’re safe. It was simple: we wanted Marcus to feel wanted for once. And while Marcus has quickly grown to love our staff and warms up fast to new visitors, it’s clear that he is struggling more and more in the shelter environment.

Pacing and jumping in a kennel is no life for any dog - especially not one who is losing hope. He’s going stir-crazy. However, when Marcus is outside of the kennel, it’s all love: hugs, belly rubs, listening to commands, and walking great on a leash. He loves adventures, water, and car rides - especially if there’s a sweet treat involved.

We estimate Marcus to be around 3 years old, so he’s still full of energy. We’re praying someone out there is ready for the commitment - and the endless love and laughs Marcus promises to bring. At this time, Marcus does need to be the only animal in the home, and we believe he would do best in a household with children middle school age and up!

Marcus is neutered, current on vaccines, and microchipped. To view all of our available animals and inquire about a possible adoption or foster, please call (315) 738-4357, stop-in, or visit our website: www.anitas-sshs.org/adopt 🐾

Calling all Beagle lovers!

Meet Bo - unfortunately, he’s been a frequent flyer at our shelter. While we think he’s absolutely adorable, we’re sad to see him back again. Bo originally came to us in March of 2024 - and no less than four days later, he was adopted. He was returned within a month, adopted again shortly after, and now, unfortunately, he’s back once more. This makes the third time Bo has walked through our doors, each time with a little less hope than before 😔

Bo has lots of energy - in true Beagle fashion. And no matter how many times we explain that it’s just part of his breed, that energy often lands him right back in the shelter. He’s full of s***k, has a strong sniffer, and loves nothing more than a good nose-to-the-ground mission. With training and dedication to positive reinforcement, Bo would absolutely thrive.

We truly believe Bo would make an amazing lifelong companion and a wonderful family dog. He has tested well with the big three: other dogs, cats, and kids 🙏

Bo is neutered, current on vaccines, and microchipped. To view all of our available animals and inquire about a possible adoption or foster, please call (315) 738-4357, stop-in, or visit our website: www.anitas-sshs.org/adopt 🐾

Our purple room has the worst luck ☹️

Some of our longest-term cats reside in the purple room, and they haven’t seen much interest in months. Meet Max, Smokey, and Amber - some of the chilliest, happiest, and sassiest cats we know. We wish nothing more than for them to finally find a home.

Max (3 years old) is a super friendly and outgoing boy who has been waiting for months. He’s FIV+, but that doesn’t stop him from living a happy, healthy, and easygoing life around other kitties. Poor Max was unfortunately surrendered to the shelter because he didn’t get along with the other cat in the household. The only strong personality trait we can say about Max? He will terrify every dog in existence - he definitely needs a dog-free home 😂

Smokey (2 years old) is our longest feline resident at 8 months. While she does live up to her name and you might catch a little “smoke” sometimes, she’s really a precious girl who deserves a chance. Smokey comes to you on her own terms, loves to people-watch, and will accept scratches if you win her over. We’re not sure of Smokey’s past, as she was a stray in Utica, but we know she needs help writing a better future.

Amber was a stray found in Utica 6 months ago. While she hasn’t shown too much of her personality yet, we know she is very friendly and easygoing. She loves to perch up high and lounge, and she especially enjoys taking advantage of our cat condo during warmer days.

They've all made friends with each other, but now it's time for them to make human friends - preferably ones who will take them home! All cats are spayed/neutered, current on vaccines, and microchipped. We are open today from 11AM - 5PM. Try NOT cuddling this guy.

Danny DeVito. Winston. Daniel. Daniel Winston DeVito. Whatever you call him, he’s the biggest cuddle bug we know 😍 Unfortunately, this sweet soul has had a rough go of it. When we most recently shared Danny, it was to say that he had unfortunately been returned just a week after testing out a new home.

Before that, Danny originally arrived at the shelter as a stray just before Easter. Hopefully, his photo shoot with our Easter Bunny gave him a good first impression. Danny can be a little shy at first, but let us tell you - after just a few minutes and a little trust, you’ll have no idea how to pry him off your lap.

On the couch together? Butt in the air, head in your lap, begging for scratches. Sit down on the floor? Same thing. We can only imagine the joy of cuddling in bed with this sweet boy. Danny enjoys treats, and the occasional chew toy or ball, but overall he’s a calm pup who just wants to be loved.

While Danny was briefly out of the shelter, he lived with seven other cats. He was a bit overwhelmed by the amount but managed fine - so we think a home with fewer than seven cats would be ideal 😁 He also does well with other dogs. Because of some sore spots and allergies he came in with, we recommend a home with middle-school-aged children and up who can respect his sensitive areas (like his ears).

Danny is neutered, current on vaccines, and microchipped.

❤️ADOPTED❤️
Cookie has her eyes on you to take her home 🥰🤣

Cookie was surrendered just a couple of weeks ago after her previous owner fell ill and later passed away. At 6 years old, her whole world turned upside down.

Since arriving, Cookie has been a little shy, but once she warms up, she melts right into you. She adores head and chin scratches, and you’ll know you’ve truly won her heart when she climbs right into your lap. True to her Chihuahua roots, she’s got a bit of sass - so don’t even try scratching her butt - but that’s part of what makes her so lovable.

Cookie can have a touch of “small dog ego” when it comes to other pups, and we’re happy to show you what that looks like during a meet. We do think she could do well with kids, as long as they’re able to respect her boundaries. Cookie is spayed, current on vaccines, and microchipped. We are open from 11AM-5PM, stop-in or apply at the link in our bio to adopt!

We mean it when we say that fostering changes lives.

CeCe has had quite the journey. She and her brother (Onyx) arrived at the shelter after their previous owners became homeless and were kicked out of local hotels because they wouldn’t give up their dogs. The stress of the shelter made it necessary to separate the two of them.

After some time, CeCe found a foster home. During her stay, her foster family started to notice changes in her spirit, and soon enough our Vet team diagnosed her with Addison's Disease. While we weren’t excited to learn CeCe had a condition at only 4 years old, we were relieved that it was a very treatable one. But once again, CeCe was back at the shelter - until Jennifer, John, and their sweet daughter came along.

CeCe has been with them for months now, and they are absolutely in love with her. If they weren’t moving out of the country this winter, CeCe would officially be theirs. While we know it will be a heartfelt and difficult goodbye, we are sharing CeCe's story now in hopes that she never has to come back to the shelter and instead finds a smooth transition into her FURever home.

"CeCe is such a treasure. If we weren't moving to France in January, we would adopt her without reservations. My heart is already hurting thinking of how we will have to say goodbye to her. She is just the sweetest, cuddliest, happiest girl. We love her so much.

She adores my 13 year old daughter. They are inseparable, but she never turns down scratches and cuddles from anybody, so I often lure her away for my own personal cuddle time. She has gone everywhere with us since she came to stay with us. She's a great hiking dog, swimming dog, picnicking dog, but she's also a big couch potato. She loves treats but isn't bad about begging. She lets us know when she has to go potty. She takes her medicine with no complaints and eats her dog food like a champ. She doesn't pull on a leash and she loves car rides. She's great with children and has been around other dogs in public and has no issues. She's also fine in big crowds. She hardly ever barks. She makes the cutest little sighs when she's happy and wraps her paws around you when cuddling. Her tail is always wagging and she has the biggest smile and most beautiful expressive eyes. She gives us the biggest greetings when she sees us and is so full of love and excitement to see her people. She really, really is the best dog. "

Thinking CeCe might be the right fit? Call (315) 738-4357 to schedule a meet or apply here to adopt: https://www.anitas-sshs.org/adopt/apply/Dog

Fostering saves lives. Fostering provides a safe and healthy environment for animals who come to us in tough situations - those who have spent months to years at the shelter, are frequently overlooked, and need more space and time to heal.
