Surgery Spotlight: Gastropexy 🐾
Meet Sugar 🐶, a 1 year-old female Standard Poodle, who recently came to our clinic for a prophylactic gastropexy, spay, and umbilical hernia correction.
A gastropexy is a preventative surgery where the outer wall of the stomach is sutured to the pet’s body wall, in order to prevent the stomach from flipping in the future. When a stomach flips, it quickly turns into an emergency situation (gastric dialtation volvulus/GDV)!
There are many proposed causes of why a dog‘s stomach flips, but deep chested dogs are more predisposed to the injury.
Many owners choose to schedule the preventative surgery along with their pet’s spay or neuter. The additional time under anesthesia is minimal, and owners can live with less fear of bloat in the future!
Sugar did very well for her procedures and is already back to going to the office daily with her dad! 💗🐾
We are so happy that we could help sugar and her family! 😷🐶💕
