Ever feel like your dog doesn't act normal or is "broken" for not exhibiting behaviors you see in other dogs? This is likely due to the differences in your dogs breeds and, therefore, their natural DRIVE! Knowing what breeds are actively in your dog can really help you understand their genetics and, coincidentally, the behaviors and drives you are likely to see in your individual dog(s)! Each breed group, hunting, herding, working, companion/non-sporting, all have differences specifically bred into them and will ultimately affect things like temperament, interests, and prey/hunting drive. Trainer Ester takes immense joy in helping educate owners on their specific dogs breed backgrounds and encouraging or teaching those owners proper and effective ways to foster the mental and physical needs of their specific dogs! Each dog is unique, but all dogs need enrichment that satisfies the drives present in them! Want to learn more? Call us! 918-497-8855 #

Gentle reminder for all of us with animals.
Fireworks start earlier and earlier each year. I heard pops yesterday at 3pm all over the city during work. Please contain the animals early.

Cats need to be behind doors that won't be opened hardly at all or can even be crated. It does not have to be a small crate. A dog crate with a bed, food, water, and a litter box can be more comfortable for spending long periods of time in. Bathrooms and rooms that have clear pathways to the exit are not good options. People forget to close front doors, bathrooms, and back doors often when they are carrying food or going out to play.

Dogs should be let out to potty on leashes or long lines any time after 5pm. This is not simply because they may run away, but OTHER PEOPLES animals may jump into your yard. You never wants fights amongst dogs you don't know OR them chasing animals out of your yard and accidentally getting lost. Being able to pull your dog in quickly and keep them away from animals is incredibly helpful during times of panic. If you own properly fitting harnesses, today is the day to use them in lieu of the collar when they are out on leash. Keep both on, but leash to the harness. People can also spot those much easier on long-haired dogs from a distance. Owned dogs will be turned in and posted much faster than, "stray dog running loose without collar."

Make sure EVERY animal has a collar or harness on. Tags are great, but I suggest using a sharpie to write your phone number on the collar itself if it's bright enough fabric in addition to the tags. Scared animals run sporadically, and can tear off tags and old collars easily.

Double check that their microchip info is up to date to where you CURRENTLY live and what your current phone number is.

Take clear, brightly lit photos of your dogs and cats in case you need to make missing poster signs OR going to prove ownership at local shelters or vets.

You've completed the class, practiced the homework, and you feel confident that your dog "gets" the wait command... But, how do you know when you've "finished" working something? When can you confidently say your dog KNOWS a concept, such as Wait? Trainer Ester goes over the idea of perfection vs. consistency! Every dog and trainer team is different in their needs and expectations, and that's OKAY! She covers the basics that you are looking for in your wait and what the overall goal is for a command like this! Wanting to know more, or get some advice on when to call your commands finished?
