Working in an animal shelter changes you. 💔

People see the happy adoption photos, the wagging tails, the “gotcha day” moments, and trust me, those moments are beautiful. They’re the fuel that keeps so many people going. But behind the scenes, there’s another side that most people never fully see.

Shelter staff, volunteers, rescuers, vet teams, fosters… they carry an unbelievable amount of emotional weight every single day.

They see neglect.
Abandonment.
Cruelty.
Animals that were failed by humans over and over again.

They stay late comforting scared dogs who don’t understand why they were left behind.
They celebrate life one moment and grieve the next.
They pour every ounce of themselves into trying to save as many animals as possible, while constantly wishing they could do more.

And the hardest part?
Many of them go home emotionally exhausted, yet still wake up the next morning and do it all over again because the animals need them.

Compassion fatigue is real.
Burnout is real.
Mental health struggles in animal welfare are very real.

So today, I just want to say this:
If you work in animal welfare, I see you.
Your heart matters too.
Your mental health matters too.

And if nobody has told you lately, thank you for continuing to show up for animals on the hardest days.

Also, if you’re struggling mentally, feeling overwhelmed, or just need somebody to talk to, please message me privately. You do not have to carry everything alone. 🖤
