It's Blackfly Season!

With an increase in pets getting bitten by Blackfly, here's what you need to know! These pesky bugs often target the ears, eyes, and bellies of dogs and sometimes cats, leaving behind bright red circular lesions. Don't worry—these usually aren’t itchy and will heal on their own.

Many pet owners mistake these bites for ringworm or Lyme disease rashes, but ringworm appears as scaly patches, and animals do not develop the classic bulls-eye rash that humans develop from Deer Tick bites. If you see red rings on your pet's belly this spring, it's likely Blackfly bites!

However, if the lesions become itchy, larger, or show signs of infection, consult your pet’s doctor. To protect your furry friends, keep them indoors when possible, or use pet-safe fly repellents, avoiding their mouth and eyes.
