The Topeka Zoo is heartbroken to announce the passing of giraffe, Liz. The Giraffe & Friends building will be closed today to the public, however the giraffe will still have access to their outdoor yards.

Liz (full name Elizabeth) was born August 21, 2018 here at the Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center to parents Hope & Sgt. Peppers. Her namesake was a very generous late supporter, Elizabeth Stratton. More than 1300 viewers tuned in to the live YouTube video of the birth, welcoming her into the world.

The Zoo is currently gathering more information- Liz passed last night at approximately 10 pm. We will share more in the upcoming week once pending results are in from Liz’s recent exam. We are very appreciative of any mindful comments or letters of support and would love to read any special memories of Liz that supporters want to highlight. Cards for staff can be dropped off in the Zoo's gift shop.

Giraffe feedings will resume Sunday, August 31.

💗 Trunks up for Cora- it's still Asian Elephant Awareness Month! 🐘

Every day, Asian elephants are facing threats in the wild- poaching, habitat loss, and a devastating virus called EEHV (Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpesvirus) that can cause fatal hemorrhaging in young elephants. Each year, the Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center funds the cost of equipping and fielding a full-time Veterinarian in Sumatra, whose job is to travel between villages with elephants to treat them, take care of injuries or any other medical needs those elephants may have, and keep them healthy. In doing so, we protect the genetics that are passed between the population of wild elephants and the elephants under human care which then protects the future health of the species.

Each donation to the Zoo helps support our Conservation & Education initiatives. You can help by donating here: https://support.topekazoo.org/give/410899/ #!/donation/checkout

Happy birthday to this HANDSOME Vision! 🦛

15 years ago, visitors during an evening 'Twilight Tour' were gifted with witnessing a very special occasion- hippopotamus Mara giving birth! Mara gave birth to a healthy boy, Vision (now lovingly nicknamed Tank) who charms every guest that walks into the Animal & Man building or sees him soaking up the sun in his outdoor pool. Melons are some of his favorite treats- his specially carved watermelon lasted all of 10 seconds before he fit the ENTIRE thing into his mouth for perfect smashing!

Once Vision reached the size and age of needing his own space, Mara was safely transferred to a new home and now resides at the Honolulu Zoo in Hawaii!

AN UPDATE REGARDING GIRAFFE, LIZ. 🦒

The Giraffe & Veterinary team at the Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center are happy to update followers that Liz, the 7-year-old giraffe, is up and recovering from her exam that was performed on Sunday morning.

“The giraffe exam went very smoothly as planned, with excellent teamwork,” shares Dr. Shirley Llizo, Zoo Veterinarian. “From start to finish, it took about two hours. We checked her teeth and nasal passages as she had nasal discharge periodically; her hooves were x-rayed and trimmed; her tail was also x-rayed because she had lost the bushy part of it a few months ago; skin biopsies were taken as she had some “bumps” on her legs; lab results are pending. Liz has recovered as expected from anesthesia but will continue to be closely monitored by staff.

Animal Care Director, Wrylie Guffey adds “The moment Liz stood up, we all took a relaxed breath. We will continue to monitor her behavior for the next several days, but we have seen her eat, drink, and go to the bathroom- which are all positive signs after an exam. She is also responding well to her keepers, which is comforting to see that trust continue after an event like this. We're very pleased with how everything went… it was truly a testament to how teamwork and planning can come together so well. It was a very busy and crowded place, but everyone had their job to do and did it well.”

We extend our deepest gratitude for the continued support and well wishes to our beloved Liz. ❤️

🦒 🦒 🦒Heads (way, way) up! We’d like to share with our "Zoopporters" that the giraffe barn will be closed to guests starting Friday through the weekend while our animal health & care teams gives Liz, one of our much-loved giraffe, a full veterinary exam.

These thorough check-ups help us learn more about our animals and ensure they continue to receive the very best care possible. Liz’s visit will bring together our skilled veterinary staff and several visiting specialists from across the country who will work side-by-side to give her the most complete exam possible. It’s all part of our ongoing commitment to providing top-quality health care for every animal who calls the Zoo home.

We know how much Liz means to our community, and we’d love to pass along your good wishes. If you’d like to send her some extra love, feel free to drop off a “get well” card at the Zoo this weekend, our team will make sure she gets every single one.

While the barn is closed, the giraffe will still have access to their outdoor habitat, so you may spot them enjoying the sunshine during your visit. The giraffe we**am will also be temporarily turned off to give Liz and her care team a little privacy while they work.
