June's Giraffe Feeding Schedule (featuring lettuce eating champion, Daisy).

This year, our friends at Silver Lake Bank graciously sponsored giraffe feedings for the summer, making most opportunities FREE to the public.

πŸ¦’ Sponsored Giraffe Feedings:
Sundays 1:30 pm - 2:00 pm
Tuesdays 11:00 - 11:30 am

πŸ¦’ Additional Giraffe Feedings ($1 per feeding)
Saturdays 11:00 - 11:30 am

As a reminder, all feedings are limited to 30 minutes or 100 feedings for the diet & health of our animals. We highly recommend arriving at the Giraffe & Friends barn as close to the feeding start time as possible.

We truly appreciate our sponsors that make it possible for us to give these opportunities to community members & visitors.

Sharing the impressive story of tiny, but mighty, Sophie! πŸ’—

Roughly two months ago, Sophie, a 19-year-old lesser Madagascar tenrec, underwent anesthesia and surgery to remove a rapidly growing mass on her neck. Because of the mass’s location and the tiny size of tenrecs, the procedure required careful planning and delicate surgical technique from our veterinary team.

After surgery, the mass was submitted for testing by a veterinary pathologist and was identified as a thyroid tumor. The thyroid is a gland in the neck, which primarily controls the body's metabolism. Thankfully, Sophie's tumor was completely removed, meaning it is not expected to regrow.

Lesser Madagascar tenrecs are small insectivorous mammals, native to Madagascar and known for their unique appearance and behaviors. Providing advanced medical care to animals of all sizes β€” even the smallest species in our care β€” is an important part of modern zoo medicine and conservation-focused animal care.

Sophie faced a long recovery, but thanks to the dedication of our veterinary and animal care teams, she has made an incredible comeback and has a second chance at life. 🀎
