UPDATE: The kittens are doing well. They were definitely born indoors, they are clean, well fed and friendly, not strays or feral. Leaving them outside with no notice was wrong and while we are beyond full 140+ cats and kittens in our care, we fortunately found space with such short notice.
We are concerned that the mom cat will not be spayed and will continue to have more kittens, which is one of the reasons we were trying to find out who she was.

Finally I would like to address the people who commented that it was better than dumping them somewhere else. Sure that's true BUT we are a rescue, not a shelter, we have limited space and limited financial resources. We don't get any funding aside from donations and adoption fees, which barely cover the cost of vetting the animals to get them ready for adoption. We are all volunteers who devote our lives and any free time we have to saving animals in need. Our first and foremost responsibility is to the animals who are currently in our care. When we say we are full it's because we cannot responsibly take on more than we already have, either financially or space-wise. When people reach out for help we try to offer resources so they can get the help they need. If it's food we have a free food pantry, if it's vet care we offer free vaccine clinics. For spay and neuter we often offer to help get their cats spayed or neutered to stop the cycle or offer info on spay and neuter clinics that are low cost.
You want to help? Instead of bashing rescues and shelters, go volunteer, offer to foster for your local rescue/shelter. Volunteers are tired and burnt out, physically and mentally, especially during kitten season when they get multiple calls and emails daily for help. Don't be a keyboard warrior and actually go help animals that have been let down by other people.
Does anyone recognize this person? She left a box of 5 kittens outside of our rescue this morning at 11:20am. No call, no email, no ringing the doorbell, just left them outside in a taped up box. Fortunately they didn't stay outside for long and they are safe with a foster.
Animal abondonment is illegal in NJ and this could have ended badly if one of our volunteers hadn't gone there shortly after they were left. We know rescues and shelters are full but this is not the answer.
