𝙉𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙡𝙮 100 𝙮𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙨 𝙖𝙜𝙤, it all began with one dog, one woman, and one small act of kindness. ❤

Our Story Starts in 1921.
6 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘰𝘧𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘧𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨.

𝘽𝙚𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙚 the kennels.
𝘽𝙚𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙚 the adoption rooms.
𝘽𝙚𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙚 the staff and volunteers.
𝘽𝙚𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙚 the thousands of animals who would one day pass through our doors…

There was a woman named Mrs. Ben Johnson, a small collie, and a cold, stormy night.

In 1921, Mrs. Johnson was on her way to the opera with her husband when they came across a little collie huddled in a doorway. 🐕

The dog was undernourished, frightened, and shivering in the cold.⛈️🥶

𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘥. 🛑

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘢 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘸𝘢𝘪𝘵.

Mrs. Johnson wrapped the little dog in her coat and took her home. 🥰

🐾 𝘼𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙗𝙚𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜…

Before long, Mrs. Johnson and her friends began to see a greater need in our community: a safe place for stray dogs to stay until they could find loving homes.

𝘚𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘥 𝘶𝘱 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘴𝘭𝘦𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘴, 𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘩𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘣𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘯 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯 𝘢𝘣𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘥𝘰𝘨𝘴.🏠🐕

Between bringing in and training new staff, the City Council business, the New Website we've been working on, other projects we're not totally ready to talk about yet 👀, 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘩𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘵𝘩 𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘶𝘱 🙀, and just the day-to-day of running the Rescue, we've been kind of MIA on our socials. 😅

Behind the scenes, we've been busy little bees 🐝. That said, as we head into the end of August, we're wrapping up a lot of that stuff. Updates soon to follow! 😁

𝗪𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻, 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘂𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱. . . . 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝗮 𝗕𝗟𝗔𝗦𝗧 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁! 🤪🤣

Apparently Toledo Pride wasn't eventful enough; 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙫𝙖𝙣 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙨𝙢𝙤𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙫𝙞𝙡𝙮 𝙩𝙤𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙙𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙚𝙣𝙙 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙋𝙖𝙧𝙖𝙙𝙚 𝙍𝙤𝙪𝙩𝙚. So naturally, we spent the next two hours stranded on the side of the road, in the rain, taking selfies in front of the smoking van because we're just girls, and what else were we supposed to do? 𝗪𝗲 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝘀, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝘀.🐈✅❌🚐

Special shout-out to 𝗠𝗮𝘆𝗼𝗿 𝗪𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗞𝗮𝗽𝘀𝘇𝘂𝗸𝗶𝗲𝘄𝗶𝗰𝘇 for taking our group photo and getting some Honey love, and the "𝗚𝗮𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰" (how he introduced himself) who took a look at the van and assured us we weren't going to blow up. 🔥❌👍

Thank you Shaun Hegarty 13abc Action News for visiting last week to discuss our zoning change petition to Toledo City Council and our goal to expand our facility. We welcomed the opportunity to further discuss the issue and why the change is not only a good thing for the Rescue, but the entire animal welfare community in Toledo.

Shout out to Nature's Nursery for taking these Chimney Swifts on short notice!

At the end of the day, these babies were dropped at our gate. Our Director quickly reached out to NN founder, Laura, asking "what are they and what do I do?", expecting to take them home for the night (he has fostered a ton of birds for NN a bunch of years ago).

Luckily, Rachel, a very experienced birder and foster, took them in. One did not make it, but the other ate and made it through the night. Cats, dogs, birds or bunnies, it takes a village and cooperation!
