Juneteenth marks our country’s second independence day. Although it has long been celebrated in the Black American community, this monumental event remains largely unknown to most Americans. Not even a generation out of slavery, Black Americans were inspired and empowered to transform their lives and their country. The historical legacy of Juneteenth shows the value of never giving up hope in uncertain times.
It’s no secret: The medical profession has contributed to numerous injustices infllicted on historically marginalized racial and ethnic groups in the U.S. In 2016, the University of Virginia found that half of all medical students thought that Black Americans don’t feel pain the way whites do, making a case that African Americans were not fully human. Medical racism has deep historical roots, extending beyond individual instances of unethical studies to the very foundations of medical education.
