A new species of piranha in the genus ๐‘†๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ž๐‘ ๐‘Ž๐‘™๐‘š๐‘ข๐‘  (Characiformes, Serrasalmidae) is described from tributaries of the upper Madeira River drainage in the Bolivian Amazon Basin. This species shares a similar morphology with ๐‘†. ๐‘๐‘œ๐‘š๐‘๐‘Ÿ๐‘’๐‘ ๐‘ ๐‘ข๐‘  but showing differences in body depth, body color and shape, and can be morphologically distinguished from its congeners. Genetic a**lysis of COI sequence data revealed minimal divergence (~1%) from morphologically recognized species, indicating that although ๐‘†. ๐‘๐‘œ๐‘š๐‘๐‘Ÿ๐‘’๐‘ ๐‘ ๐‘ข๐‘  is the species most similar in appearance, genetically it shows the closest relationship to ๐‘†. ๐‘๐‘œ๐‘š๐‘๐‘Ÿ๐‘’๐‘ ๐‘ ๐‘ข๐‘  and ๐‘†. ๐‘š๐‘Ž๐‘”๐‘Ž๐‘™๐‘™๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘’๐‘ ๐‘–.

Researchers look into a potential hybrid zone in the endemic species of ๐ป๐‘ฆ๐‘๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘๐‘–๐‘ ๐‘ก๐‘Ÿ๐‘ข๐‘  from the lower and middle rio Xingu, Brazil. Hybridization poses a threat to the genetic integrity of the parent species and may accelerate the decline of these already endangered species in this rapidly degrading environment. The author's findings are crucial for guiding conservation strategies and understanding the complex diversification processes in the rio Xingu.

Using geometric morphometrics, this study reveals a concerning morphological overlap between ๐ป.๐‘ ๐‘’๐‘–๐‘‘๐‘’๐‘™๐‘– and ๐ป.๐‘ฆ๐‘ข๐‘‘๐‘—๐‘Ž which indicates hybridization in impacted areas and threatens to dilute the unique genetic characteristics of these parental species. In contrast, ๐ป. ๐‘ง๐‘’๐‘๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ž remained morphologically distinct, reinforcing its status as a highly vulnerable species. Hybridization poses a threat to the genetic integrity of the parent species and may accelerate the decline of already endangered species in this rapidly degrading environment.

These findings are crucial for guiding conservation strategies and understanding the complex diversification processes in the rio Xingu.

This study looks at the remarkable reproduction strategy of Corydoradinae catfish, characterised by a fertilization mode known as s***m drinking. With this fertilization mode, the female ingests the s***matozoa by attaching her mouth to the a**l region of the male during courtship. Thereafter, the s***m pass through the gastrointestinal tract and get released from the general excretory pore of the female. The s***m then reach an external place between the pelvic fins and pe*****te the ovulated eggs stored there, which is a form of in vitro fertilization.

The T-spawning position is well known among Cory keepers, but less so the process of fertilisation, as this paper demonstrates the female produces proteins that essentially "stuns and shields" ingested s***m as it passes through her gastrointestinal tract.

Seminal vesicle (SV) secretions enhance fertilization by regulating s***m motility and fertilization capacity, and by forming plugs that prevent mating with other males. Although SVs are rare in teleosts, certain species, such as ๐ถ๐‘œ๐‘Ÿ๐‘ฆ๐‘‘๐‘œ๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ž๐‘  ๐‘ ๐‘๐‘., do possess them. In ๐ถ๐‘œ๐‘Ÿ๐‘ฆ๐‘‘๐‘œ๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ž๐‘  ๐‘ ๐‘๐‘. and other species that exhibit s***m drinking or related behaviors, females attach their mouths to the males' ge***al pore to ingest semen, a reproductive behavior known as s***m drinking. However, the major proteins and functions of seminal vesicle fluid (SVF) in ๐ถ๐‘œ๐‘Ÿ๐‘ฆ๐‘‘๐‘œ๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ž๐‘  remain unidentified.

This study aimed to identify the SVF proteins in ๐ถ๐‘œ๐‘Ÿ๐‘ฆ๐‘‘๐‘œ๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ž๐‘  ๐‘Ž๐‘’๐‘›๐‘’๐‘ข๐‘  and clarify the functions of the identified major SVF proteins. The SVF of this species was found to be highly viscous with a high protein concentration. S***m motility was strongly suppressed in the presence of the SVF. We identified three SVF proteins โ€“ alpha-2-macroglobulin (A*M), carbonic anhydrase 12 (CA12) and lymphocyte antigen 6 (Ly6) โ€“ through RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq), LC-MS/MS and amino acid sequencing. Additionally, we found that the identified CA12, termed โ€˜caCA12,โ€™ was degraded into about 10 kDa and 33 kDa polypeptides containing the CA domain. The 33 kDa polypeptide with the CA domain was found to inhibit s***m motility. The identified SVF proteins, including caCA12, may play a role in keeping s***m in an immotile state until they are close to the female ova, facilitating the remarkable s***m drinking reproductive process observed in ๐ถ. ๐‘Ž๐‘’๐‘›๐‘’๐‘ข๐‘ .
