A little fun fact about me..
I have a big, giant soft spot for the senior pups. 🩶🐾
During my long career I have specialized in many areas but one constant has been the gentle, intentional and loving care of the older dogs in my care.
It’s an important part of what I train my assistants and a huge part of how I run my business. Quality and time over quantity ..every time.❤️🐾
So this time of year I like to post some useful tips and information to keep our elder pups healthy, happy and safe.
You know I’m going to start with regular grooming! Because it’s true.
It’s imperative in the golden years to keep up with grooming.
Letting too much time pass between visits can lead to longer, more difficult sessions and much more handling than your older dog may be able to tolerate.
Not to mention when matts or undercoat build up it hinders their natural ability to keep themselves warm in the cold or comfortable in inclement weather. ❄️
Lets not forget those nails!! I cant express how important it is to stay on top of keeping their nails at a healthy length!!
Senior dogs nails not only grow faster as they age but they dont wear them down like they could in their youth!
Overgrown nails..even a little overgrown can split and break in cold weather and cause a good amount of pain. They can splay or curl under into the pad as well.
Also and so importantly, when nails are too long they can cause discomfort in the feet, hips and back. ESPECIALLY in older dogs.
I could go on and on with issues arising with ears and teeth and glands too!
However, one thing I would like to stress is nutrition.
I’ve been studying dog nutrition for 20 years and in my experience it is the absolute key to health and longevity for our fur family. This rings especially true for the senior pets. It is never too late to boost your dogs, nutrition! 
As dogs age their nutritional needs change vastly and exponentially. Even a simple adjustment or supplementation to their diet can have amazing results regarding gastrointestinal, topical, allergy or even energy and cognitive issues.
I promise it doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive! However the results are priceless. Giving your best friend the care they deserve, the health. The comfort.
It is precious.
