Something new and fun at Northern Tropics, baby praying mantises! These little ones have already doubled in size since they hatched here a couple weeks ago. They are currently feasting on fruit flies and pin head crickets. Come check them out at the zoo and maybe take one home!

Northern Tropics will Not have a booth at the Pennington County Fair this time (too much stress on the animals with it being so many hours a day). We will however have a float in the parade Wednesday evening. My cousin and I will be holding some of our larger snakes and we’ll have some helpers handing out these stickers. These are our Vietnamese Mossy Tree Frogs (when they were smaller). Come grab a sticker at the parade and check out the frogs in person at our zoo!

Our rodent order has arrived and rats are back in stock! 🐀

FYI: We are unfortunately out of all sizes of rats at the moment. The next shipment will arrive next week, we will post when it does. We still have mice tho. Our apologies for the inconvenience.

Look at those eggs in her belly! Some species of geckos make it obvious that they’re gravid/pregnant. It’s fun to see the eggs now because once she lays them they are hard to find.
This species is called a mourning gecko. You may have seen them in our zoo These are an example of parthenogenesis where they breed without a mate. That’s why their name is spelled “mourning”, as if they’re grieving their mate.
Another small parthenogenetic lizard in our zoo is the Bynoes gecko. Come take a peek next time you’re out!
