ISO: The perfect new owner for a gem of a mare. **Note, the closest major city to us is Grand Forks, ND. PLEASE check a map before you assume you want to drive to Thief River Falls!**
Her ideal owner will be an intermediate-level adult amateur learning dressage that wants a horse to spoil incessantly and love on. Preferably in a place with pasture board with calm companions, and a cozy place to hide from the winter wind. Her owner should want to ride regularly, love to groom horses, and understand that just like you – this girl probably needs a chiropractor from time to time!!
Allie is a wonderful 10 year old OTTB. She stands a full 17H tall (measured with a true level), and has clean legs and great hooves. She ran on the track and accumulated over $86,000 in winnings from what I was told. Unfortunately, her owner ran into some hard times, and I cannot provide the ideal situation for her….so I am looking for someone who can make a good match for this lady.
Allie rides English and Western, bitted or bitless. She won’t buck or rear (more on that later), and has 4 correct gaits, including a gallop. She has been ridden by beginners (supervised in a round pen) to advanced riders with no major problems. Allie has sat in my pastures for four years, and gets randomly pulled out a few times a year when we need another horse, but this isn’t the best life for her. In the videos with the dressage saddle below, she hadn’t been ridden in an English set up in more than FIVE YEARS…and took everything in stride.
Here's the catch. Allie has arthritis in her hips because of her track experience. She needs bodywork to help her re-align everything, and regular light riding to keep her stretched and supple or she stiffens up. She has NEVER been lame, had an abscess, or had any gait problems in the four years she’s been here. She is just finishing a month of Adequan, which should be repeated each spring. I also keep her on Eclipse PM for nerve support for her spine.
Despite the arthritis, Allie can easily make it into third level dressage once she is back in shape. She has all the training….but like us, she’s been sitting on the couch watching Grey’s Anatomy reruns for four years and needs a gym membership! Because of the hip arthritis, bucking and rearing are as uncomfortable for her as they are for us! She prefers to just go forward or stop. She knows one-rein stops and will follow them.
You MUST have farrier and vet references. Allie does well for all vet work, but she needs breaks when trimming her hinds….she’ll start shaking when she’s getting fatigued, and then she just needs a walk out and back to stretch out again. Bute 45 mins before trims isn’t a bad idea.
Allie is SUPER friendly. She LOVES people, brushing, and hanging out. She is, however, the nervous type if she doesn’t have an emotional support human. She WANTS that bond, and once you have it with her, she comes when she’s called, follows you around, and will honestly try anything you ask. While other people can ride her, she’s more interested in having her own personal human. I have used her for lessons, and she’s decent, but she definitely prefers people she knows.
We don’t have bodyworkers close to us, and it makes it hard to get her what she needs. I also can’t give her the attention she deserves.
Allie’s one serious quirk while riding is that she does NOT like when other horses pass her (she won on the track because she’s a bit competitive!), and she may try to kick at them if they do. It’s easy to stop. You just touch her with your heel and the rein on that side to tell her no.
Allie trailers fine, but she will always hesitate to get in because she’s worried she won’t fit! Sometimes she just needs to look inside to understand it’ll be okay, but if she gets a bit balky, she’ll jump right in with a flag, sweatshirt, or waved hand behind her. She does well with slants, but she fits better in wider trailers!
Allie is an easy keeper for a TB, and does best on pasture to keep her moving. She is middle of the pecking order in a herd, and is hardly mareish. She rides out great on the trail, and will ride out alone if she trusts you. If she gets super nervous, she will start physically shaking, like a giant chihuahua, and wants to put her head on or near you for reassurance. Typically she’ll do this at the vet! Allie is good with dogs, four-wheelers, tractors, skid steers, mowers, etc. She’ll actually try to eat the bale while I bring it into the pasture if I don’t yell at her!
Last vettings:
3/19 – Sedated dental – we checked her for Lyme’s and anaplasmosis to make sure nothing else was making her stiff – she checked clear!
3/27 – Trim (Allie is barefoot and has always been that way here. She does fine on gravel roads.) Dewormed with ivermectin.
4/11 – 6-way, rabies, Coggins done
Next trim due: May 22nd
Spring f***l indicates she is a high shedder, and should be dewormed with Strongid at the beginning of June. I have a tube I will send with her if you purchase her before then.
Allie also comes with: Her heavyweight winter blanket, halter and lead rope, rain sheet, anatomical dressage bridle and the bit she prefers!
Video disclaimers:
1) It’s still chilly up here by Canada, so our horses aren’t slicked out yet. Allie lives out all winter in well below zero temps - so she's still fuzzy!!
2) I haven’t been in a dressage saddle for any length of time for four years myself. If she can handle me riding like a sack of potatoes with my legs sliding all over, she’ll do fine with most riders!! This is her at her very worst…she only gets better from here!
3) Allie is stiff, so I won't ask her to do all the things she actually knows because it isn't fair. She has lateral motion, and bend, but she is limited because she needs some poll work at the moment. Once she gets body work and comes back into shape, she's a helluva mover! She has the nicest slow trot you've ever seen in your life! She needs 2-3 months over poles and regular riding, and she should tune right up!
$7500, CASH ONLY. She is only discounted because of her arthritis. Despite likely being good for another 10 years with regular care, I want her to go to a home that will provide that. Price goes UP in July, because I will start re-conditioning her in June. This is a high-quality mare that deserves a loving person of her own. She is FOR sale, not ON sale, and you must show up and meet her before I will accept a buyer. Holds only with a non-refundable deposit. PPEs fine at your expense, but I have already told you about her arthritis!!
I will not take a million videos – she is an honest mare….come and meet her if you’re interested.
Allie should NOT be used for jumping, gaming, racing, or any work involving extremely tight and fast turns….she LOVES dressage, and is absolutely game for a trail ride here and there! She can even do novice endurance, but I wouldn’t take her up to an LD.
