The Pudelpointer was developed in the late 19th century through the systematic breeding of 11 different German hunting poodles and 80 different pointers. The Pudelpointer was introduced to the US in 1956 by Bodo Winterhelt, one of the founding fathers of both NAVHDA in 1969 and the Pudelpointer Club of North America in 1977. Pudelpointers are widely recognized as excellent versatile hunting dogs with strong desire and style in both water and the field, and are generally intelligent, eager to please, cooperative, and friendly. Pudelpointers make excellent family companions but, like all versatile dogs, they are high-energy dogs that require vigorous daily exercise.

Currently NAVHDA recognizes 35 different breeds of pointing dogs. While each breed differs somewhat with respect to their physical characteristics, they all possess the versatility required to locate, point, and retrieve upland game, find and retrieve wounded waterfowl, and serve as well-mannered companions.
