🔥 We’re in the middle of a heat wave and today’s the worst of it. 🔥
With “feels like” temps hitting 106°, this is danger zone weather for our four-legged friends. 🐾
Keep them safe:
💧 Plenty of cool, fresh water
🏠 Indoors with AC or fans
🌳 Walks only early morning or after sunset
🚗 NEVER leave them in a parked car - not even for a minute!
All these Frenchie like dogs are currently on stray hold waiting for their owners to come claim them. They are NOT on the adoption floor.
We as volunteers have noticed a surge in Frenchies arriving at the shelter over the past couple years as the breed has grown in popularity and it’s not just happening in Lee County but throughout the country.
This is the answer to that question which is most often quoted:
“The answer lies at the intersection of irresponsible breeders, pandemic era impulse purchases, and the harsh realities of owning one of the most genetically complicated dog breeds in existence”.
Our interpretation of this is that there are too many backyard breeders and people are paying them thousands of 💵’s for these incredibly cute dogs not realizing or anticipating the cost of owning one.
If you recognize one of these dogs as either your dog, your neighbor’s dog or a family member’s dog please come claim them!
They are at Lee County Domestic Animal Services. 5600 Banner Dr. Fort Myers, FL. www.leelostpets.com

That "forever home" feeling?
It can come with some surprises.... and not the good kind.
You've got that new food all ready to go.
You know what you prefer to feed
Great!
Transition needs to be really slow.
One teaspoon swap per day or even less for puppies or small dogs.
There will be accidents.
It can be more that just "nerves".
Urinary tract infections and colitis can be common with newly adopted dogs.
Their system can be under an enormous amount of stress.
Vet visits aren't unusual for newly adopted dogs.
Don't rely on them to signal they may need to toilet.
Opening a door and letting them out often isn't enough as they are easily distracted in a new environment.
By a leaf.
A bird.
Or even just being in the new yard may be overwhelming for them.
They forget what they even needed to do and yup.....another wee surprise on the rug when they trot back inside.
It will get better.
Even if you are ankle deep in carpet shampoos and cleaning cloths.....this does pass.
