Dogs don't naturally understand human language. Words have no meaning to them until we teach them what those words predict or what behavior they should perform.
Dogs are excellent at reading body language, movement, and gestures. That's why a dog may respond perfectly to a hand signal for Sit, Down, or Stand but seem completely confused when you only use your voice.
When we teach a behavior using a food lure or hand movement, dogs often learn that visual cue first. If we consistently say the word and move our hand at the same time, the more noticeable hand signal can overshadow the verbal cue.
The key is teaching the word independently. Say the verbal cue first, pause briefly, then help with the hand signal if needed. Reward the correct response.
🐾 Your dog isn't necessarily ignoring you. They may simply not understand what you're asking without your body language!
Knowing a behavior and understanding its verbal command are two different skills.
