Honest question…

What’s the biggest obstacle keeping you from growing some of your own food? Time? Space? Cost? Confidence? What the heck am I doing?

I think a lot of us get stuck in overwhelm and don’t know where to begin…even though growing food doesn’t have to be complicated.

I’d love to hear genuine insight! No judgement at all. Trying to figure out how to better serve people.

I’ve spent the last couple of days reading every comment, even the ones that challenged me. I appreciate every perspective because one thing has become crystal clear…

There isn’t one problem, so there won’t be one solution.

If we truly want local farms to still exist 10, 20, or even 50 years from now, we have to start thinking bigger than the next market season. We have to invest in agriculture the same way we invest in every other essential part of our communities.

Here are a few places I think we should start:

🌱 Teach agriculture early. Get kids back on farms, into gardens, and learning where food comes from. The next generation won’t protect what they don’t understand.

🚜 Make farming attainable. Land, equipment, insurance, and infrastructure costs have become overwhelming. We need more opportunities for beginning farmers to succeed.

🥕 Support local with intention. Even purchasing one item a week directly from a local farm keeps more dollars in your community and helps preserve farmland for the future.

🏛️ Create policies that strengthen small farms. Grants, tax incentives, educational programs, and practical legislation can remove barriers instead of adding them.

🤝 Work together. Farmers, market managers, artisans, restaurants, schools, and communities all have a role to play. A healthy local food system isn’t built through competition, it’s built through collaboration.

📚 Help consumers make informed choices. Understanding the difference between local, seasonal, imported, and resold products empowers people to support the food system they want to see.

❤️ Celebrate farmers. Farming isn’t just another profession. It’s the foundation of every meal we eat. If we want more people to choose this life, we have to start valuing the people who already have.

None of these ideas will fix everything overnight.

But doing nothing guarantees we’ll lose more farms.

I’m done asking, “Whose fault is it?”

I’d rather ask, “What can we do together?”

Because I still believe local agriculture is worth fighting for.
