Our First Podcast Episode is Here!
We’re excited to launch Veterinary Horizons, brought to you by Specialty Veterinary Pharmacy . This debut episode was recorded live at Southwest Veterinary Symposium. We had the honor of hosting Dr. Scott Driever, a small animal surgeon, AAHA President (American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and practice owner.
In this conversation, we explored how mastering leadership through continuous learning can drive growth and innovation in the veterinary field.
A huge thank you to Dr. Driever for his incredible insights and to Southwest Veterinary Symposium for being such a great host. This is just the beginning of many important conversations that aim to advance veterinary medicine and support professionals like you.
Recently, Dr. Driever and two of our technicians attended the Southwest Veterinary Symposium for some continuing education, something that we're passionate about for our team. While he was there, he was asked by our friends at Specialty Veterinary Pharmacy to be one of the first guests on their new podcast "Veterinary Horizons" and he and David had a great conversation about team culture, technician utilization, client care and even a little bit about Scouting. Check out the podcast for yourself and let us know what you think! Link is in the comments!

Last week, Dr. Driever and Susan traveled to Asheville, NC for a meeting with our Veterinary Management Group. Normally these meetings are several days of lecture, followed by a team building activity and the schedule of activities is built out months in advance.
When Hurricane Helene hit, it hit hard. When our contacts in Asheville said they wanted our meeting to go on and were ready to start getting back to their new normal, our meeting planner jumped into action and led from the heart. We know a lot about hurricanes here, but the destruction we witnessed was like nothing we've ever seen. There is only one veterinary hospital left open in Swannanoa, and they started seeing pets in the parking lot shortly after the storm, much like we do at Animal Hospital Highway 6.
Swannanoa Valley Animal Hospital had their first full day of operation last Monday since the storm hit in late September. Our group decided we had to find a way to help, so many of the veterinarians in the group applied for temporary licenses to practice medicine in North Carolina, while others opted to help with landscaping repairs after the floodwaters destroyed everything from the soil under the foundation of the hospital to the fencing behind the hospital to the landscaping around the building.
Dr. Driever and his colleagues examined and treated a steady stream of pets as the flow of people needing help never stopped. Susan helped in the file room, filing charts when the doctors were done with them and tackling some alphabetizing issues that were slowing the reception team down when they were working so hard to keep up with all of the administrative tasks that front desk super stars manage.
Is everything back to normal in Asheville? Not by a long shot. Potable water is being trucked in daily to restaurants and hotels. The city is under a boil notice indefinitely. Internet service is spotty, but Starlink is helping keep people and businesses connected. The people of North Carolina are resilient and optimistic about the future. It was our honor to be able to do a small thing and help out a fellow independently owned veterinary hospital in need of a break, both physically and mentally. The veterinary community is small, but we know how to take care of one another in times of need. Veterinary Management Groups - VMG
