Family reunions should be a joyful thing, but sadly, this is the second family reunited this week due to a return.
Titan (6 month old male) and Marmalade (5 month old female) were adopted almost exactly two months ago and returned a couple days ago because their adopter said she had begun experiencing allergy symptoms around them.
They were part of a very large family group we rescued from a home in Trumbull County. All total, we received five mamas and litters of kittens from that house, and half are still waiting for homes.
Now they have rejoined Pink (Marmalade's mother), Helios (Titan's brother) and Dream (Marmalade's brother) here at the shelter.

Unique, Real and Genuine the ferrets are back together again. Real was adopted just a couple days ago but returned after less than 24 hours due to no fault of his own.
We were told he attempted to steal food from the adopter's cat's food dish, and the cat took offense to that. No one got hurt, but the adopter returned him.
This trio of ferrets was surrendered a couple weeks ago after their original owner abandoned them at her father's house when she moved out of state without food or any supplies. We were told they are 4 years old. Both white ferrets are girls. The brown one is a boy. All are fixed and descented. The adoption fee is $50 each.

Wilhelmina (3 month old brown female) and Joni (3 month old black female) love to play. They aren't actual siblings but they were found as strays around the same time and raised together in foster care before arriving at the shelter.

Okay, so Harry might be a bit of a toy hoarder.... but that's all the more reason to adopt him so his sister, Tracy, gets a chance to play too. Or better yet, adopt Tracy so she can have all the toys at your house. Win, win!
These are the last two pups left from the Home Alone litter. They just turned 6 months old and have been waiting so long for their forever homes after watching 14 of their siblings leave with new families. They are Pit/Boxers, expected to be around 50 to 60 pounds.

While trying to deal with a leaking roof, we heard the front door open and close quickly before spying a woman trying to quickly sneak away.
When confronted, she and her female getaway driver claimed this mom and kittens were left in their truck, but when they were told that they could not simply dump and run (had to fill out paperwork), they instead sped off. Yes, we got their license plate.
So now we have a mama with 4 week old kittens who are soaked from the storm despite having no empty cages and no fosters.
Our longest canine residents are just about to turn 8 months old.
Jackfruit (green collar) and Banyan arrived with their siblings at two months old. Their mother was a purebred Smooth Coated Border Collie the owners bought from an Amish farm. Their father was Pit mix. They take more after their mother. We're expecting them to be around 40 or 50 pounds full grown.
Over the last six months, the boys have said goodbye to sibling after sibling and even a few unrelated pups who have hung out in their room. But these two have been overlooked.
Both boys are very outgoing and playful. They love other dogs and kids.

Yesterday, we had a surprise new arrival... actually three of them!
The man who brought them in said his daughter moved out of town and left them with him the day before. No cage, no supplies, nothing. She didn't even tell him their names. They arrived all crammed inside a single small shoebox.
Surprisingly though, they are in good condition and very social. There are two white girls and one brown boy. We were told they are likely around 4 years old.

Abandoning a dog, or any animal, is never the right thing to do. But abandoning one in an unsafe location is 10 times worse.
If anyone has any information on who abandoned this dog outside the shelter on 6th Street in Struthers, please call 330-397-8270 or the Mahoning County Dog Pound.
A neighbor alerted us today that there was a dog tied to the fence to the side of the shelter sometime in the morning. When we investigated, we discovered a very friendly Pit mix tied to the fence with a leash, wearing two collars. He had managed to get tangled in a partially downed power line. It's a sheer miracle he didn't get electrocuted.
The guineas really got to pig out today thanks to a surprise donation if lettuce from a local woman's garden. They are thrilled!!!
The guinea pigs in this video are all female and looking for great new homes. Please use the Book Now button on the page to schedule an appt to meet them! The adoption fee for guinea pigs is $20 each or $35 for a same sex pair.

Who says adult cats can't play like kittens? Pink isa young mama, only a year old and barely bigger than her own kitten. She loves to play!
Pink and her kittens are part of a large group of cats we are in the process of rescuing. Their former owners started with a few cats, but when those cats didn't get fixed, the population skyrocketed from there.
So far, we have taken four litters and mamas from the house with another one coming in soon!

At the end of May, we received a call from a man who had found a litter of extremely ill kittens on the street. He took them to the vet, but the antibiotics they were prescribed didn't knock out the infection. Instead of getting better, they got worse, and their finder was not in a position to do multiple vet visits and possible eye surgeries on his own.
By the time we saw them a couple weeks later, they looked like they were on death's door. They were started on new antibiotics and eye cream but we were not hopeful for a happy outcome.
A couple weeks later though, they made a miraculous turnaround! The frail, sickly kittens were active, fat and happy thanks to round-the-clock care from their finder who had agreed to foster them.
But their eyes were a different story.

Permanent damage had already been done, leaving all five kittens with vision impairments. A few had skin that had grown over the eyelid, sealing it shut completely or partially. Each kitten had at least one corneal ulcer.
Finally, on June 26, they were big enough to undergo surgery. Their eyelids were opened, and eyes finally exposed to light. Shortly after surgery, they were happily bouncing around in their recovery cages.
But it wasn't enough.
On July 3, they all underwent a second surgery to further repair the damage, and they may still need additional surgeries.
Will they ever be fully sighted? No, sadly that ship had already sailed before they ever walked through our door. Eye infections can quickly cause permanent damage in a young kitten, leading to full or partial blindness.
But will they have normal lives? Absolutely! They are happy and pain free. We hope the surgeries will allow them to retain enough vision to be able to navigate easily, but even if they do turn out to be blind, blind kittens can have great lives. We've adopted out so many blind kittens over the years
The final 5 Home Alone pups just moved into a big playroom to continue waiting for new families. They arrived at only 8 weeks old and just had their 5-month birthday, still without homes.

Originally part of a group of 16 pups surrendered to the shelter, these guys and gals are Pit/Boxer mixes.
Their former owners had two female dogs who were perfectly in sync. They went into heat at the same time. They got pregnant during a potty break at the same time. They went into labor at the same time. They even both had exactly 8 pups! Then they sharing nursing duties, so even their former owner doesn't know which pup belongs to which mama.
We are expecting these guys to be around 50 to 60 pounds full grown. Please use the Book Now button on the page to schedule an appt to meet them.

UPDATE: NUGGET HAS BEEN RESERVED FOR ADOPTION
"He's too big."
"I don't want a Pit mix."
"I don't want to spend time training him."
It's been 201 days since Nugget's "forever family" abandoned him at the pound after he got "lost" in the park.
Did he accidentally slip away while playing and they decided it wasn't worth going after him? Or did they deliberately turn him loose and walk away? We'll never know because they stopped answering their phone after three days of promising to collect him from the pound.
Since then, he's met countless potential adopters, and we've heard dozens of excuses as to why people don't want to adopt him. He's also had half a dozen people tell us he's "perfect" and promise to come back for him only to disappear.
Is he aggressive? No. He loves people and kids. He has had several kennel mates and even shares his food nicely.
Does he need training? Also yes. In Nugget's mind, he is about 10 pounds when in reality, he's close to 90 so he tends to be a bull in a china shop.
But will he love you til his last breath? Absolutely.
Nugget is a 2 year old Pit/St Bernard/Rottweiler. Please use the Book Now button on the page to schedule an appt to meet him.

The Pit/Smooth Coated Border Collie pups really wanted to "help" while repairs were being done to their room yesterday, but thankfully we convinced them to only supervise.
