My dog does great when it’s just us, it’s when people and other dogs are around that my dog just forgets it all……

Practice around people and other dogs start with just one or two around and slowly increase the number of distractions and decrease the distance as you achieve the intended behavior….

Reasons why training fails

#1 not practicing
#2 rushing the process
#3 expecting too much too fast
#4 only working on it at home
#5 only responding bad behavior not noticing and paying for good wanted behaviors … yes pay your dog when they play with their own toy or go lay on their bed or when they are being calm

We never seem to pay for the random good behavior!!!! If you want to see more of something pay for it!!!! (Pay = treat, affection, attention)

How long would it take you to learn a new language?

Give your dog that much time to learn because they are learning a new language and a new behavior

If I don’t take my dog to meet new people and experience new distractions will they still be able to learn neutrality, trust people and stop being so easily excited or reactive?

Nope not with us… maybe somewhere else with a trainer that knows something we don’t.

We only know to change a behavior your dog needs to be desensitized to its trigger and learn what the expected behavior is when the trigger is present… we definitely mean present further than your dogs personal threshold (dont just over do it day one and put your dog in an extremely stressful situation)

We aren’t sure how to help a dog trust people if the dog never meets people

We aren’t sure how to get a dog to stop pulling and barking when it sees a dog if it never gets to see a dog.

Make sense? Like how is your dog supposed to learn what to do if it’s not in the setting for an opportunity to learn?

Using high value rewards as a motivator…. Does it mean your dog will only work for that item? No it means it will be easier for you to shape the new behavior and your dog will be more motivated to cooperate.

Will your dog stop working with out the high value reward? No, not if it’s phased out correctly.

When should we phase out the high value reqard? When the intended result is achieved perfectly, repeatedly, and when it’s acheived regularly in a highly challenging environment for the dog.

How do you phase it out? Alternate with a lower value reward or alternate the reward with a different form of payment like affection, toy, different treat … it depends on the dog

Why isn’t my dog working with out the high value reward? You didn’t do it long enough they don’t understand the assignment and it’s not second nature yet

When is the right time… when your dog exhibits the necessary behavior like its second nature and effortless
