I had to share because THIS is why I love what I do!
Every day we learn about something new - but it’s not from worksheets and strict lesson plans. Instead, I base it off of kiddos daily interest and we learn on the spot as we play, chat and observe.
We are a bit sick today so it’s been a low-key TV kind of day. Kiddo requested the show Wizard of Paws (which I had never heard of.) I fell in love immediately and cried like a baby every time an animal had their first step on prosthetics. Kiddo had a lot of questions, especially during the parts where the prosthetics were actually being molded and made.
So, I cut the limbs off of our toy animals and showed him how to create prosthetics with playdough for our animals.
The show and our activity turned into a conversation about @safeinaustinrescue (where I volunteer.) We’ve talked before about the animals I take care of and what makes them “special and unique.” A lot of the animals have special needs and a number of them are missing limbs and use prosthetics. If you haven’t heard of Safe in Austin, check out their Queer Eye Episode on season 6: “Snow White in Central TX.” So, I pulled up a video about Safe and kiddo kept replaying one specific part … when Jamie yells to her husband David for help 😂.
I didn’t plan on today being educational. Sick days = lazy days. BUT I couldn’t pass up a good educational moment with a kiddo who’s genuinely curious. Instead of learning about letters and numbers, we talked about more important topics like helping others, being happy for others who succeed, and how everyone is unique in their own way and that’s what makes us so special!
*Please consider donating to Safe in Austin, who needs us more than ever!! Two major people have been badly injured this week, so we need your help!
