FYI
Ladies and Gentlemen - Harvesting a buck in full velvet is an exciting challenge! With the Ky bow season approaching quickly - I hope to see some velvet deer coming my way in the next few weeks. How do you properly care for your velvet deer once you harvest it?
Read these tips...
1 - Time is always of the essence after any whitetail is harvested.. but with the higher temperatures in the early season and the delicate nature of the velvet.. be sure to get the cape and antlers to a taxidermist or in the freezer ASAP. Do not let the antlers be exposed to heat for any longer than necessary.
2 - If putting in the freezer, do not wrap the hide around the antlers. Place a bag loosely around the antlers. Avoid any material that can fuse and stick to the velvet.
3 - Hands off! Limit the handling of the antlers. Do not drag the deer by the antlers and avoid wrapping your hands around it. The heat from your hands can cause the velvet to spoil.
How do I preserve the velvet?
All of my velvet antlers are personally delivered to an individual who places them in a "freeze-dry" machine. This process takes 8 - 24 weeks and removes all the moisture from the antlers. This is the best way of preserving the velvet and results in fluffy looking, dry, bug proof velvet that will last and look great. Please note, the velvet preservation costs on average of $150 addition to the standard shoulder mount cost.
