Obedience starts simple, but it can grow into something really useful in everyday life. Here, I’m having Poncho hold his place on the front porch while I move the sprinkler. It might seem like a small task, but that ‘place’ command gives me peace of mind knowing he’s staying put and not running off. This is what practical obedience looks like—taking the basics and applying them to real-life situations.

Heeling doesn’t have to be complicated. 🐾

Like any skill, it starts with building a strong foundation and helping your dog understand what you’re asking. Once they’ve got the basics down, we can start practicing in different environments, around distractions, and in real-life situations.

A reliable heel isn’t built overnight — it’s built through clear communication, repetition, and practice. 🐶

Not every shake means your dog is scared. 🐾

When reading dog body language, it’s important not to focus on just one signal. A wagging tail doesn’t always mean a happy dog, and a shake doesn’t always mean stress.

Dogs communicate through the whole picture — their body posture, facial expressions, environment, and what’s happening around them. In this video, this shake is excitement and anticipation because he knows something fun is about to happen! 🐶

The more we learn to read our dogs, the better we can understand what they’re really trying to tell us.

Woody is learning that “place” doesn’t just mean his bed at home! 🐾

We’re working on generalizing his place command by practicing on different objects and in new environments. Today’s challenge: a rock! 🪨

The goal is for Woody to understand the command no matter where he is or what he’s being asked to place on. Great work, Woody! 👏
